Travel companies ‘need to do more to be gay-friendly

Although plenty of travel companies now advertise themselves as being gay-friendly, a survey shows that many need to do more to justify the claim.

Out Now Consulting compiled a survey of 8,000 LGBT people in the UK and 30,000 globally and says that there is often a gulf between the claims made by travel companies and the experiences gay travellers have.

The research will be launched on Wednesday at the World Travel Market, with full results to be published in January.

Ian Johnson, chief executive of Out Now Consulting, said: “These days, suddenly everyone wants to be ‘gay friendly’ and frankly, that has made today’s LGBT consumers extremely wary of the bona-fides of the welcome being extended.

“Even the phrase ‘gay friendly’ is pretty hackneyed and does absolutely nothing to rescue a holiday that can be ruined when a stay feels far less than welcoming for a lesbian couple because of their experience at check-in, or for two gay men when ordering room service to the honeymoon suite.

“The number one factor that LGBT travellers hope for when they travel away from home is an equal and genuine welcome, which means that travel providers need to improve their communications and behaviours.

“So that LGBT people can enjoy what every other customer has taken for granted for years: the chance to simply be themselves on their vacation. It seems obvious that when we go on holidays we all want to relax and feel comfortable.

“The industry needs to lift its game on the staff training front if it is going to deliver on the promises being made to LGBT travellers.

“The message to the travel industry is clear. It‘s no longer good enough to tick an equality box, fly a rainbow flag or join an LGBT trade association because that’s not going to deliver the level of experience that today’s LGBT customers want.

“Improvements need to be made.”

Mr Johnson added the UK LGBT travel market has remained resilient despite the economic downturn. He said that it is now worth £5.1 billion annually, compared to £4.9 billion in 2007-2008.

Elton John concert paid for by EU development funds

The European Union is investigating why its development funds were used to pay for an Elton John concert in Italy last year.

John performed for thousands of people at the Piedigrotta festival in Naples in September 2009.

At least £509,000 of EU funds were said to have been used to pay for his concert.

EU spokesman Tom van Lierop told Associated Press today that the EU Commission wants “to know as quickly as possible” why the money was used for the performance.

The funds are normally used to boost the economies of poorer EU countries.

Dario Scalabrini, who was involved in organising the protest, argued: “This money was given for the marketing of the city, and that is what we did. Just consider the number of people who stayed in Naples because of the concert.”

T.R. Knight and Mark Cornelson Part Ways

T.R. Knight and Mark Cornelson. They were the very first couple we included in our first gay celebrity boyfriends feature, but sadly as a couple they are no more. At least that's what is being reported by New York Daily News' gossip blog Gatecrasher.

"Just weeks after he said he wanted to adopt a child, the former "Grey's Anatomy" star, 36, reportedly asked 20-year-old Mark Cornelsen to move out of the apartment they shared. "It just came to a natural end, no hard feelings," says a friend. "They still care about each other very much."

The way the item was worded it sounds like Knight might have been the one to break things off. At any rate it is sad news.

Gay Sex Scenes That Made Movie History

Once upon a time, there were no gay and lesbian sections in the video stores, no queer film festivals, no debates over whether or not showing gay men having sex was good for the gay community's image. There were definitely no major theatrical releases of big-budget films in which gay men had sex, and certainly no one ever dreamed a film like that could ever be nominated for an Oscar.

Here, AfterElton.com takes a look back at the most important and groundbreaking gay male sex scenes in films. These are films that for the most part had a major American theatrical release, even if it was of limited scope, with a few groundbreaking foreign, art house and GLBT film festival movies included as well. These criteria are admittedly somewhat subjective, so if you feel we've missed a film that broke new ground with its use of sex between men, let us know.

The Golden Age

In the mid-'80s a kind of sea change hit American theaters. Far from being art house and gay film festival exceptions, foreign films with gay male protagonists and overt depictions of gay male sexuality began filling theaters in cities across the United States, earning rave reviews and doing well at the box office.

This "golden age" had its roots in the post-Code, post-Stonewall days of the '60s, when a number of films with gay male sex scenes were made. And prior to the late '80s, when the AIDS epidemic and the changing political scene sent many gay films back into the film festival closet, we saw a high watermark in terms of gay sex on screen.

Another Country (1984)
The two lovers at the center of this lyrical and ultimately unsettling film are not shown in an explicit sex scene. Instead, their own delicately constructed romance is interwoven with the discovery of a sexual encounter between two other boys at the same British boarding school in the 1930s, and its aftermath.

While Another Country is loosely based on the Guy Burgess spy case that was more accurately recounted in John Schlesinger's 1983 BBC film An Englishman Abroad, it's primarily the love story of Burgess, played by a painfully young Rupert Everett, and James Harcourt, played by a dewy-lipped, even younger Cary Elwes. The film was shot at Cambridge, Oxford and Princess Diana's childhood home, Althorp Hall, because Eton, which Burgess attended, refused permission.

The sexual encounter between the two boys is intercut with Bennett's dreamy glances at Harcourt during a school assembly, and ultimately with one gentle cuddle in the moonlight, during which Bennett presses a kiss into Harcourt's hair. However romantic the relationship is, it doesn't protect them from the heightened scrutiny on homosexual experimentation among the students resulting from the suicide of one of the boys discovered having sex in a gymnasium changing room.

Another Country opened in the United States to critical acclaim and was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes in 1984. Most significantly, it marked the beginning of what became a golden age of gay male films, many British, which appeared in the next few years. (1984 also marked the commercial release of Italy's Ernesto, which was made in 1979 and had a film festival run in 1980.)

"New York Times" Interview Raises Issue of Zachary Quinto's Sexual Orientation

In a sign that the traditional media is continuing to move away from the idea that asking celebrities about their sexual orientation is somehow offlimits, the New York Times published an interview today with Zachary Quinto that broached the topic. About Quinto, who is starring in the upcoming revival of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, the Times notes that ..."the blogosphere is rife with speculation about his sexuality, no doubt fueled by his support for gay rights and organizations like the Trevor Project. He prefers not to feed that rumor mill with either substantiation or dismissal. He speaks passionately about gay marriage, about “don’t ask, don’t tell” and about the recent wave of gay bullying and suicides.

Quinto addresses the topic with the Times by saying only:

The fact that these things are such hot-button issues right now, socially and politically, I would much rather talk about that than talk about who I sleep with. I would love to be a voice in this maelstrom of chaos and obsessive celebrity infatuation that says, ‘Let’s talk about something that matters."

The article ends by noting of Quinto:

That sense of social accountability is a quality Mr. Quinto shares with Louis, who rails against the hatred lurking beneath the surface of so-called tolerance. “To return to the theater is one thing,” he said. “But to return to the theater doing a play of this import and resonance — it’s beyond thrilling.”

Greek gays rally against discrimination

AFP - Three thousand Greeks gays and lesbians marched through the centre of Athens on Saturday to demonstrate gay pride and protest against discrimination.

"We're everywhere" declared the banner at the head of the parade.

In a city that has recently seen more protests against the Greek government's austerity measures, another banner proclaimed: "Fighting discrimination and the economic crisis is the same battle!"

The country approved a form of civil unions in 2008 especially for homosexuals, but the gay community has been seeking the approval of full gay marriages.

Moscow Pride 'a success', gay activists say

A ten-minute flashmob in Moscow last weekend has been hailed as the first successful Pride parade in the city.

Gay rights activists were denied permission to hold a Pride by city officials for the fifth year running but 30 marchers were able to outwit police and security forces.

They marched down a main street in the city centre on Saturday May 29th carrying a 20-metre rainbow flag and placards in Russian and English calling for gay rights and an end to homophobia.

This is the first time a Pride event in Moscow has proceeded without violence or arrests.

Calling it a "guerrilla-style hit-and-run" Pride, British gay rights activist Peter Tatchell described how organisers fed police false information about where the march would take place.

He said: "All morning the Gay Pride organisers fed the police a steady stream of false information, via blogs and websites, concerning the location of the parade.

"They suggested that it would take place outside the EU Commission's offices. As a result, the police put the whole area in total lockdown, closing nearby streets and metro stations in bid to prevent protesters assembling there."

He added: "The Russian gay activists have won a big political and morale victory. They staged their Gay Pride march, despite it being banned by the mayor and the judges, and despite the draconian efforts by the police and FSB security services to prevent it from taking place."

Principal organiser Nikolai Alekseev, said: "Though the March was short – it happened. All the Russian media reported that for the first time in five years, the gay parade took place in Moscow without being arrested by the police and assaulted by protesters."

Moscow City Hall banned the latest march citing reasons of security, although Mr Alekseev told PinkNews.co.uk last week that the decision was "purely political" and had nothing to do with safety.

Moscow's mayor Yuri Luzhkov has consistently refused permission for the march and has called gays and lesbians"satanic" in the past.

In May 2006, more than 120 people were arrested and in 2007, Mr Tatchell was severely beaten by neo-Nazis. Last year, marchers accused police of brutality.

Mr Alekseev and other activists expect that by the time next year's Pride parade is held, the ban will have been lifted.

They are awaiting a European Court of Human Rights judgment on the case, which is expected this summer.

Ricky Martin honoured by AIDS research gala

In one of his first public appearance since coming out, Martin attended a gala for amfAR's Aids research in New York City last night.

The Livin' La Vida Loca singer was honoured for philanthropic contributions he has made to the cause through his foundation.

Other attendees were gay icons were Cyndi Lauper and hostess Kylie Minogue.

Minogue said Martin was "embracing and living life".

After refusing to answer questions about his sexuality for years, the father to twin boys came out in March.

He posted a message on his website which said: "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."

Review: "Redwoods" is a Gay Romance That's Worth Getting Lost In

Two people weary from life meet unexpectedly and, even though they only know each other for a couple of days, discover a mind-blowing love that Changes Everything. But one of them has unbreakable commitments elsewhere — forcing him to ask, "Do I dare pursue this mind-blowing love, even if it means hurting other people?"

It's the plot of Bridges of Madison County and Nights in Rodanthe, right?

It's also the basic plot of a charming new gay movie, Redwoods, released last month on DVD.

Everett feels stifled with Miles, the man with whom he is raising an autistic son. But then Miles and their son go away for a week, and Everett meets Chase, a traveling novelist in town to research a book.

And so begins a brief, bittersweet love affair that will echo throughout the ages.

Look, if you simply can't buy this premise of "soul-mates," of love-at-first-sight, you won't like this movie. And truthfully? I don't buy this premise either, not in real life, where I think "infatuation" is completely different from "true love," which is something that grows slowly over time.

But for some reason, I can suspend my disbelief long enough to buy it on movie screens — or at least I bought it here — even despite a wildly over-the-top ending. This is a fantasy, pure and simple, and it is exactly as ridiculous as the two movies I mentioned above.

It helps that the two leads, Matthew Montgomery (Chase) and Brendan Bradley (Everett), do a wonderful job of selling all this. Bradley, who is reportedly straight in real life, has an appealingly vulnerable quality to him — exactly what the role requires. And Montgomery, who is openly gay and well-known in indie gay film, is certainly my idea of a handsome stranger who would force me to Question Everything.

Keep in mind that Redwoods is a micro-budget indie gay movie, surely made on a shoestring. As such, the synth-heavy music is occasionally distracting, the story flags for a bit, and the dialogue is sometimes a little clunky (especially toward the end when they discuss ~~Chase's novel~~ their relationship).

That said, this is night-and-day better than most similarly-budgeted projects: the script is solid, the acting is remarkably good (and consistent; unlike a lot of these micro-budget movies, there are no painfully wooden supporting players). And — I know this sounds like a small thing, but it's not — the lighting, which is so often "off" in these indie gay movies, looks professionally done.

Better still, the movie takes great advantage of the redwood forests where it is set. Too many low-budget movies are set in the front room of the director's house, and they feel weirdly claustrophobic. This movie took the exact opposite approach — small budget, but big scope — and it absolutely paid off.

Mostly, I appreciate that, more and more, we live in an age where gay movies don't have to always be angsty and depressing, or preachy and pointed. There are no closeted boyfriends in Redwoods, no disapproving parents to come out to.

This a pure cheese, a frothy romance — a gay guilty pleasure! And in my book, that makes this the most revolutionary gay film I've seen in quite some time.

Why Is White Collar's Matthew Bomer's Sexuality Such a Secret?

White Collar's Matt Bomer Is a Proud Out Gay Man Who Doesn't 'Care' About the Rumors He's a Gay

The USA Network has a certain prescription for its shows: Psych, Monk, Royal Pains, and Burn Notice all are drama-comedies with romance mixed in. They're com-rom-drams? Rom-dramedies? And for the most part, they all have a gay-ish element: On Psych, the completely hetero friendship between Gus and Sean is mixed in with bromance jokes; Burn Notice's Jeffrey Donovan is like a cable network James Bond (and we all know how gay that makes him). And new this season is White Collar, a show that follows the same USA composite: Cute lead character involved solving problems (crimes, as most of USA's shows do). And White Collar also has the gay-ish element: The leading man, Matthew Bomer's Neal Caffrey, is cute and savvy and sexually confident. But we didn't know just how much White Collar went gay. Just two episodes into the series, and we learn its headlining actor is a 'mo.

Earlier this week, the gossip blogger known for making that "faggot" remark claimed Bomer is openly gay, and in a relationship with Simon Halls (pictured, on right), the chief executive of public relations firm PMK/HBH, one of the largest and most powerful PR firms in all the land. (You might have heard their name back when PMK's then-CEO Pat Kingsley, Tom Cruise's one-time publicist, made a sport out of shooting down gay rumors.) The item was picked up by the blog Boy Culture and the kids on gossip forum Data Lounge.

Bomer, whose past credits include standard soap opera stints and a regular gig on Tru Calling, is not being outed by his own camp; the website AfterElton asked Bomer's publicist about the situation, and she replied, "No comment," and "We don't comment on any of our client's personal lives." (That's a lie. PMK regularly shoots down rumors about client Jennifer Aniston's pregnancy, as just one example.)

But then there's the evidence. Namely, photos of Bomer and another gent (not Halls) in major make-out mode. (That's him in the red.)

For his part, Halls is openly gay. He and PMK co-chief Stephen Huvane, who is also gay (and a looker), exercise a level of power that, it would not be an exaggeration to say, can literally make or break someone's Hollywood career. They represent clients like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Neil Patrick Harris. Stephen's brother, Kevin Huvane, is also in the business: He's the ~~manager~~ agent of folks like — yup! — Jennifer Aniston. There are plentiful stories about Halls and Huvane treating Hollywood as their own fiefdom; more often than not, they are true.

So while it's pretty exciting to see a couple of gay men wielding so much influence in an industry where being gay is still a scarlet letter for actors, it's also a little frightening to see what happens when they try to use that power to shut down reports that impact them personally. Halls's camp wasn't successful in getting the gay celeb blogger to remove the item, but Boy Culture did take down the photos by "kind request." The blog Greg In Hollywood removed the photos, because "the photo is several years old and since the actor is out and in a committed relationship, I’ve decided to take it down. The request was made very politely by Bomer through friends."

But the Internet never deletes anything. The photos of Bomer kissing another fella are regularly available to anyone with a few minutes and interest to find it. And it's ridiculous to think that getting them yanked from a couple gay blogs will delete it from anyone's memory.

We can understand the position Bomer is in: He's been openly gay for much of his career, at least inside the industry, but now he's headlining a nearly-guaranteed-to-be-blockbuster series on USA, in a role that requires (female) viewers to lust after him. We won't jump to conclusions, but if history is any indicator, USA's executives (and those at parent NBC Universal) won't be too thrilled with Bomer's sexuality making headlines.

To which we say: Too late.

Or maybe Halls is just unhappy seeing the Internet flooded with pics of his current beau getting randy with another man?

UPDATE: Sean Akers, Web designer to the gay stars (read: Zachary Quinto), who says he is a friend of Bomer, writes Queerty: "Matt Bomer is an out actor. He is dating Simon Halls. They have kids. And these pics are 9 years old. It is drudging up his past to reveal something that isn't a secret. Posting these pics only serves to hurt Matt's family. He is not hiding, but this kind of post is exactly why so many gay actors do hide. In a world where this shouldn't matter, it still does. As his friend, I am thinking of his kids and his relationship. I am thinking about how people in a community that should respect Matt for being open about his sexuality are being turned against him. He didn't ask you people to take down the pics. Simon Halls and PMK had nothing to do with it. It was me who asked. As Matt's friend. Matt is the kindest person I know. He is genuine and he works very hard on his career and on his relationships. His family is his priority. And the post and the pics sadden me."

It's a nice sentiment, but here's the rub: As a high-profile television actor, Bomer sells his personal life as much as his acting skills. This is the arrangement celebrities agree to when they join the Hollywood elite. Ask George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, and even Jon Gosselin. Or Rosie, Ellen, and Neil. Substantial paydays and the perks of celebrity are joined by prying eyes who want to know about your intimate lives. And especially because Bomer is an out actor, as Akers notes, he should understand his private life carries an asterisk. Our coverage is not the reason actors stay in the closet; they stay in the closet to avoid being labeled gay by the mainstream entertainment press. Us? Mr Gay China Beauty Pageant Closed

The press releases sounded promising: “The Mr Gay China competition is much more than a beauty contest. While physical beauty will be part of the judges’ considerations, it is a young man’s character and personality that will make a difference in the selection."

The winner will be chosen by the audience at the event, whom they believe will be the best representative of gay China, among the final three candidates who are selected by the judges

Although homosexuality was officially considered a mental illness until as recently as 2001, gay events in China have been neutrally, if not positively, covered by local media in recent years.

Co-organiser and Managing Director Ben Zhang was recently quoted in media reports as saying that mainstream media will not be invited to the pageant as he is concerned that overexposure might result in “unnecessary difficulties.

And then:

BEIJING -- Police shut down what would have been China's first-ever gay pageant on Friday an hour before it was set to begin, highlighting the enduring sensitivity surrounding homosexuality and the struggle by gays to find mainstream acceptance.

Organizers said they were not surprised when eight police officers turned up at the upscale club in central Beijing where the pageant, featuring a fashion show and a host in drag, was set to take place.

"They said the content, meaning homosexuality, there's nothing wrong with that, but you did not do things according to procedures," Ben Zhang said. Police told him he needed official approval for events that included performances, in this case a stage show.

"I kind of saw that coming," Zhang said.

Chinese police frequently cite procedural reasons for closing down gatherings that are deemed to be politically sensitive. Though the pageant did not have any overt political agenda, similar events in the past - such as a parade during the Shanghai Pride Festival last year - have been blocked by authorities.

A movie franchise is like a shark. For it to stay alive, it has to move forward. It’s a lesson that the Eating Out franchise would do well to learn.

I liked 2004’s Eating Out a lot. The campy gay sex farce was downright revolutionary coming after decades of earnest, angsty coming out dramas (and two years before Another Gay Movie).

2006’s Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds wasn’t as successful, but it wasn’t a disaster.

But Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat, now playing in limited release, is the weakest entry in the series so far. It’s not that parts of it aren’t funny. It’s just that the movie takes absolutely no chances, choosing instead to change a few details and repeat what came before in the first two movies.

Q. Allan Brocka, the creator of Logo’s Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in all the World and writer and director of Eating Out and the producer of Eating Out 2, doesn’t appear to have been involved at all this time around, and it shows.

The movie quickly kills off the main character from the first two movies, Kyle (American Idol’s Jim Verraros), replacing him with Casey (Daniel Skelton), a wide-eyed gay innocent who takes one look at the slutty things going on during the opening credits and says, “I’m gonna love this town!”

Rebekah Kochan is back as the foul-mouthed Tiffani – “the slut with the mouth of shit.”

Casey and Rebekah team up and soon meet the sizzling hot Zack (Chris Salvatore), smarting over having just been dumped by his boyfriend, Lionel (The Janice Dickinson’s Modeling Agency’s John Stallings).

Casey thinks Zack is out of his league, but Rebekah talks him into inventing a fake online profile, using photos of her hot ex, Ryan, under the (accurate) assumption that people are often more honest with strangers than they are with people they know.

Naturally, Zack falls in love with the non-existent guy who has Casey’s personality but who looks like Ryan. Then the real Ryan turns up back in town and, well, complications ensue.

It’s a clever premise, and there are some nice moments along the way. Daniel Skelton has a goofy, appealing charm, and Leslie Jordan has a nice cameo where he warns that “having sex with someone else to get over a break-up never works. Never.”

There’re plenty of funny, and well-deserved, pokes at the gay community, as when a character logs online and is instantly bombarded with dozens of people wanting to “PNP!” Indeed, the film’s satire of the gay community’s online hook-up culture is the best part of the film.

And when clueless, self-centered Rebekah doesn’t know what “LGBT” means or how to pronounce “Matthew Shepard,” it’s hard not to laugh.

Still, too many jokes fall flat. Rebekah singing “Cum-baya” at a funeral instead of “Kumbaya” (“someone’s horny my Lord, cum-baya…”) was just sort of embarrassing. And the line “Blow job for your thoughts?” probably read funnier on the page.

Basically, the film suffers from Bad Gay Film-itis: uneven pacing, sometimes wooden acting even in the lead roles, and waaaaay too much talking.

In fact, the movie makes a big mistake by wrapping its “mistaken identity” storyline up too quickly. This results in a long middle section where the characters … talk.

And talk and talk and talk.

Then after another pivotal plot point, there’s still more talking. Not even two scenes of full-frontal male nudity can make all this talk not seem boring.

But the biggest problem may be that we’ve seen this movie before, in the first two entries. There’s even one scene where Rebekah tries to get straight-guy Ryan turned on enough to have sex with guys that’s virtually the same as happened in Eating Out. This might have been intended as an homage, but it comes across as a repeat.

There is a fresh and funny sex comedy to be made in 2009. This isn’t it.

The Real World: New Orleans’ Danny Roberts(who recently topped our Top 15 Favorite Gay Reality Stars poll) first met his partner Wes in college at the University of Georgia. They were both closeted, so their brief affair was hush-hush.

“Fast forward 10 years and I’m living in New York City and out with friends for my birthday,” Danny tells AfterElton.com. “Guess who approaches me and asks if I remember him? Yep, there’s Wes. My reply was, ‘Of course, you’re the sexy Puerto Rican from college!’ So we started dating casually, but eventually I had to move to Atlanta for a job. The decision was made for Wes to join me so we’ve been living together since. I guess you can call it all fate!”

The couple has been together – “in some fashion on another,” Danny says – for two years now.

“We’re both getting used to living in the South,” Danny says. “It’s a real first for Wes and practically new for me after being away for ten years. It’s culture shock at its best! We both have a similar temperament and world-view so it’s a good match. I would say our number one love that we both enjoy more than anything is travel. We soon leave for Central America to see the Mayan ruins, which is a life-long dream of mine.”

Are there kids in the couple’s future? “He’s very anxious to start a family,” Danny says, “but I just want a dog! You have to start somewhere, right?”

Liveblogging "One Life To Live": The mystery of Brian Joseph McElhane

Okay, what the hell is going on here? Cristian and Layla are throwing around a book called How To Tell Your Parents You're Gay by Brian Joseph McElhane (and it looks to play a part in a sitcom-esque classic "misunderstanding" today).

There's just one problem ... Brian Joseph McElhane doesn't exist.

If you Google him, the only thing you'll get is Ed's Daytime Drive-by from yesterday. Which means either TPTB on the show used "Random Author Name Generator" ... or something weird is going on. Hmm...

Anyway, join us for the fun, as Oliver hopefully will come out to Kyle, and refresh for updates.

2:05PM EST: Carlotta picks up "the book" and reads the title out loud, then slowly looks at Cristian. Cris says "mommy, wait". How cute is it that Cris calls her "mommy". Awww!

Cole is about to be shot in the back of the head by the surfer-dude blond cop. Somehow I think he'll be stopped. Rachel has been put on the stand by That Bitch Tea Delgado, and is paying the price. She brings up her hooker/drug addict past. Stay classy, Tea.

2:10PM EST: This stuff with Carlotta is cute, even if the whole "gay misunderstanding" schtick is as old as the hills. She tells Cristian that she loves him even though he's gay, and that she accepts it, and that he doesn't have to hide it anymore. She talks about noticing "the signs", and a bemused Layla pitches in with "because of all the time he spends at the gym?", and Carlotta agrees and says "and all the trouble he has with women". Cris is flummoxed, and tries to get Layla to vouch for his heterosexuality.

2:20PM EST: Has Dorian always been this shrill-sounding? All I hear is "Kaw! Kaw! Kaw!"

The blond surfer-dude cop is shot by John, and as a dazed Cole is led out of his cell, Oliver swoops in to check on the fallen cop.

Layla reluctantly tells Carlotta that "The Book" is for a friend of theirs, and that Cristian is not gay. There's talk of how accepting Carlotta is even with being a church lady, but the only thing I could think was "that other actress quit over this?

2:25PM EST: Tea has completely destroyed Rachel on the stand, and as Rachel runs out of the courtroom, Nora gets in Tea's face and asks how she could do that. Tea yells "I did it for my client!", at which point Matthew points at her and screams "You're fired!" I'm liking this kid more and more.

2:40PM EST: I love that Oliver is focusing on Police Cop business, and he and John head on out together to capture the bad guys.

Layla and Cristian laugh off what happened with his mom, and then talk about giving "The Book" to Oliver. Layla commends him for going into a bookstore and buying "The Book" for him, which is something a lot of straight guys might be too uncomfortable to do. Cristian admits that two guys at the bookstore actually slipped him their phone numbers, prompting Layla to call him "gay catnip".

2:45PM EST: Tea drives Nora over the edge, and Nora delivers a hot slap across her face. The judge holds Nora in contempt, and for good measure holds Tea in contempt as well. Ha!

Oliver and John approach the mayor's office, and John reminds Oliver that they have to play this by "The Book". So, they're going to tell the mayor's parents that he's gay? I'm confused.

2:55PM EST: Matthew is mad at himself and mad at Tea, but since Tea has been put in a cell with Nora, he should probably be worried about the both of them.

Oliver and John bust into the mayor's office with guns blazing, but he's nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, The Russian mobster shows up at Todd's house ready to shut him up ... permanently.

And once again, Layla shoots down Cristian's not-too-subtle desire to be with her. Poor Cristian. But hey, he still has those two numbers!

Soap star: 'Coronation Street needs more gay characters'..

A Coronation Street actor has said the soap needs more gay characters.

Antony Cotton, who is openly gay, plays the camp Sean Tully in the ITV soap.

According to Holy Soap, the former Queer As Folk star said: "The story goes that one in person in ten is gay. We've got 70 people in ours [Coronation Street] so there should be seven gay characters at least.

"Especially as Weatherfield is the gayest place on the planet as far as female characters are concerned! It's the campest show on TV at times."

On portrayals of gay characters on TV, he said: "The more there are, the more people are not going to seek representation.

"You can associate with one type and say that's who I'm similar to, and not that person, but it's not a problem because there are two different portrayals."

Stonewall estimates that between six and nine per cent of the population is gay.

Coronation Street did not have any gay activity until 2003, despite its massive gay fanbase.

Gay men and lesbians more likely to seek treatment for mental health and substance abuse..

Gay men and lesbians are around twice as likely as their straight counterparts to seek treatment for mental health issues and drug and alcohol abuse, a study has suggested.

The research from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), surveyed more than 2,000 California residents.

It found that 48.5 per cent of gays, lesbians and bisexuals had accessed treatment in the last year, compared with 22.5 per cent of straight people.

Lesbian and bisexual women were the most likely to seek treatment, which researchers said was unsurprising as women use health services more than men.

Heterosexual men had the lowest rates of treatment.

Researcher Susan Cochran said: "It is well known that health services utilisation is greater among women generally. Here we have shown that minority sexual orientation is also an important consideration. Lesbians and bisexual women appear to be approximately twice as likely as heterosexual women to report having received recent treatment for mental health or substance use disorders."

"The pervasive and historically rooted societal pathologising of homosexuality may contribute to this propensity for treatment by construing homosexuality and issues associated with it as mental health problems," she added.

As a candidate Obama promised us a lot; as president he’s delivered very little -- and many gay people are getting impatient. Does the outcry unmask this president’s indifference, or reveal our own impotence as a movement?

He looked like a hero, and that was the problem. Barack Obama seemed almost reckless with the truth, implausibly idealistic -- and (though we might not have said this out loud) we worried that America wasn’t “ready for a black president.”

After eight years of George W. Bush, we were sick of being excluded, sick of being hated. Hillary Clinton seemed the safer choice. We knew that she knew how power worked, and we wanted someone who could win. Moreover, many gay leaders -- the men and women with money and influence, whose success was built on cunning -- looked at her and saw themselves: making her way by wile, unafraid to sacrifice integrity when the game demands it.

But truth will out, and many placed their bets on Barack Obama, and when he took the lead in the primaries, he won over most of the rest. He talked to us -- and about us -- more, and more explicitly, than any nominee before him. And not just when he had to. Not just at Human Rights Campaign dinners. At black churches, in his stump speech, on the night he was elected: He said the word that every major candidate before him had found every excuse not to say. He named us. He said gay.

After his election Obama named someone else. The world’s most influential Protestant minister, Rick Warren, who campaigned against gay marriage, was asked to give the inauguration’s invocation. Obama tried to quell outrage and concern by restating his commitment to be “a fierce advocate of equality for gay and lesbian Americans.” And during his first months in office, while he worked with Congress on the economic stimulus package and the wars, and laid groundwork for legislation to protect the environment and reform health care, we were on our best behavior, waiting for him to reveal his plans to keep his promises to us.

Momentum for gay equality kept building -- in the courts, in legislatures, and in culture. Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine legalized gay marriage -- which was, significantly, also endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Dick Cheney too announced his support for marriage equality, as did top Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who managed John McCain’s presidential campaign. Polls showed clear majorities supporting repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” even among conservatives and churchgoers -- constituencies that had long been in favor of the antigay military policy. Still, through all of this, one word was conspicuously absent from the president’s vocabulary.

The hero was a player after all.

Gavin Creel Doesn’t Just Break The Fourth Wall (He Smashes It to Bits!)

Ask any actor: stage performances don’t always translate well on television.

But when Gavin Creel, the star of the new revival of the 1967 musical Hair, took the stage to perform the song “Hair” at this year’s Tony Awards, it was instantly clear why his explosive, trippy performance, with its subtle hint of bisexuality, had been nominated for an award.

Before you knew it, Creel and his fellow cast members had broken the fourth wall, jumping off the stage and dancing out into the audience. Creel even got to serenade Anne Hathaway.

“The ‘Hair’ number just rocked,” Creel admits. “I was really proud of the show and how we came off on the Tonys.”

Now Creel, who was also nominated for a Tony for his Broadway debut in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, is getting more intimate still, with a performance later this month at Joe’s Pub in New York. It’s his first concert since coming out publicly earlier this year, and Creel promises a night of emotional honesty unlike any performance he’s ever given before.

Recently, we chatted with Creel about that breathtaking Tony performance, how his life has changed since coming out as an actor, and his desire to have the first number one single where a guy sings about his love for another guy.

AfterElton.com: So I’ve been listening to your 2006 CD GoodTimeNation and really liking it. I was expecting showtunes, but it’s not. Some of it is very pop. Do you see yourself as a pop star?
Gavin Creel: That would be a dream-come-true. I want to tour and play an auditorium and have it packed with people who know my songs. I don't need to play arenas. I wouldn't turn it down if I got that famous, but I want to be as much of a musician as I am an actor. I want to do both. And be a theater actor. I love the theater. That's where my heart is. I love the way I've been embraced by the musical theater community.

The projects that I've picked, and been able to do, have been really varied in a beautiful way. Going from being in the 20s [in Thoroughly Modern Milly] to Classic Contemporary [in La Cage aux Folles] to being a chimney sweep [in Mary Poppins] to being a hippie [in Hair] is kind of a bizarre group of dudes. All the while, I've always had a desire to sing and compose myself, getting closer and closer to being able to stand in front of an audience and expose who I am through my music.

They seemed so close! Madonna’s gay brother Christopher, one of her five siblings, didn’t just decorate her homes and her concert stages; he also acted as her back-up dancer, assistant, and personal stylist. He’s prominently featured in the 1991 documentary Truth or Dare.

These days? Not so close, not since Christopher published last year’s negative tell-all, Life With My Sister Madonna. Christopher claimed that he and his sis are estranged because of then-hubby Guy Ritchie’s “homophobic” views and wrote a book — about her — to "define myself and separate from my sister at last." But frankly, the very existence of this book makes the explanation from the Madonna camp sound far more plausible: that Christopher is a drug-addicted leech who his famous sis finally decided to stop supporting.

Гей-парадът в София премина без проблеми. Събралите се близо 200 човека стигнаха от началната точка Моста на влюбените при НДК до крайната "Червената къща" на ул. "Любен Каравелов" за близо половин час. От наетата частна частна охранителна фирма също потвърдиха, че всичко е било наред и че се е разминало без инциденти.

По-рано полицията задържа един, човек, който крещеше обидни думи, но след това провинилият се беше освободен.

Подаръци

Преди началото на парада организаторите раздадоха пластмасови каски на събралите се около 200 души. Според участниците - за безопасност. Според един от организаторите - гей фондацията "Джемини" - символ на това, че всички са работници. "Отношенията работодател - служител", поясни Аксиния Генчева от фондацията. По нейни думи събралите са около 300, за колкото са били и очакванията им.
Участниците получиха и цикламена лента за ръка, както и знаменца в цветовете на дъгата.

Шествието

Шествието премина по маршрута от Моста на влюбените крах НДК, бул. „Фритьоф Нансен", ул. „Граф Игнатиев" и ул „Любен Каравелов". На "Фритьоф Нансен" се появи и платформа, на която танцуваха травестите Урсула и Елза Парини. Преминавайки през "Патриарх Евтимий" някои от събралите се освиркаха шествието. От съображения за сигурност полицаите помолиха танцуващите на платформата да слязат.
В края всички влязоха в Червената къща на ул. „Любен Каравелов". Генчева обаче помоли онези, които нямат ленти да останат отвън.

Участваха майки с деца, повечето от дошлите бяа млади хора. "Искаме това да става всяка година, защото отношението трябва да се промени", разказа 26-годишната Христина. Присъстваха и няколко чуждестранни гей-организации.

Полиция

По време на парада имаше засилено полицейско присъствие. В началото и края на шествието имаше полицейски коли, а близо 50-те човека от частната фирма направиха и кордон на участниците. Те носеха червени фланелки и палки. За да гарантират реда в самото шествието, някои от тях не носеха отличителните предмети. Имаше екипи на Бърза помощ, както и представители на жандармерията.

Hot 100: Men of Color

1. Taye Diggs

For many gay men, 38-old Taye Diggs made his biggest impression on them playing James on NBC's Will & Grace for five episodes in 2006. As James, Will's love interest, Diggs provided the perfect counterpart to Will's fussiness, and gay men especially appreciated the kiss James and Will shared.

But if that's all you know about Diggs, then you're missing out on how truly exceptional this multi-talented performer truly is. Digg's big break came in 1996 when he originated the role of Benny in Rent. That was followed by roles in Chicago and Wicked and it should be noted, Diggs sings so well, he's featured on the cast recordings for Rent, Carousel and The Wild Party.

Diggs' film roles include a memorable performance as Angela Bassett's very sexy love interest in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, as well as parts in The Wood and The Best Man.

Television success has proven a little more difficult for Diggs as the two shows built around him — Kevin Hill and Day Break — both failed to make it to a second season. But as one of the stars of ABC's Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, Digg's appears to have finally found the right vehicle to show off his wide-ranging —and hot —talent.

2. Darryl Stephens

If gay men love guys who play gay roles, we really love out gay men who play gay roles. But even in 2009, the number of roles for men of color are shockingly few as are the number of out actors of color. Therefore, it really is no surprise that the 35-year old Stephens claims the #2 spot on this list. After all, as Noah, the title character on Noah's Arc, Stephens proved week after week that hot not only comes in every color, but doesn't have to mean especially butch or super macho. Noah dressed with great panache and was a gentle soul who nonetheless exuded sexiness.

While Stephens himself doesn't usually dress with Noah's flair, he's every bit as sexy as the character he plays. He's also just as out, having discussed the issue in 2008 with Instinct Magazine saying, "I'm still private about my personal life, but my being gay certainly does not have to be any big mystery or secret." Nor is it a secret that gay and bisexual guys are very fond of Darryl.

3. Jensen Atwood

As Wade, Noah's love interest on Noah's Arc, Jensen Atwood gave viewers a front row seat to his character's sexual awakening as he found himself falling in love with another man for the first time. Meanwhile, as bisexual warlock Griffen on Dante's Cove, viewers saw a much more erotic, sensual character who slept his way through half of the island.

But whatever the role, this 32-year-old actor commands attention with his mellifluous voice and mesmerizing eyes. And gay men don't just love this straight guy for playing gay roles (frequently shirtless). This NAACP Image Award nominee has also appeared at numerous GLBT events where he has spoken out against homophobia. Our only complaint? We don't get to see him frequently enough.

Gay Celebrity Boyfriends!

Lachlan Fletcher (Partner of Matthew Mitcham)

By now, everyone knows the incredible story of how Australian Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham, 20, struggled with depression in his teens, eventually giving up diving. He eventually rediscovered the sport with the help of his partner of two years, Lachlan Fletcher, who had been unable to travel with Matthew to the Olympics until the couple won a grant from the Johnson & Johnson Athlete Family Support Program.

Mitcham won gay hearts all over the world when he hugged and kissed his partner on camera after winning the gold, giving Fletcher his Olympic bouquet (though American viewers were left in the dark when NBC chose to censor all news of Fletcher’s partner and sexual orientation). Fletcher, who Mitcham calls “the one constant” in his life, is a student in marketing in Sydney.

Terry Miller (Boyfriend of Dan Savage)

Dan Savage, 44, has spent the last decade writing about the intimate details of his relationship with his boyfriend Terry Miller in his popular sex advice column Savage Love, and in memoirs such as The Kid, which chronicles the story of their open adoption, and The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family, which documents their decision to get married. As a result, we know a lot more about Miller, a stay-at-home dad, than we do about many of these other celebrity boyfriends.

In fact, given Savage’s penchant for writing about his own sex life in his column, there’s not a lot we don’t know about Terry.

Най-любимият любовник на дядо Гейо е Камен Во, който направи пъртина до манастира... Освен че прави дарения на манастира, Камен спретна и няколко документално-исторически филма за обителта, една от които бе и дипломната му работа, с която наскоро завърши НАТФИЗ като режисьор.

Many AfterElton.com readers are familiar with Michael from his three years on steamy supernatural soap Dante’s Cove, while some, including this columnist, may even recognize him from his stint in 2003 on As The World Turns. Below we chat with the handsome actor about how he feels about his new role as Grant, Calvin’s love interest on the college comedy-drama Greek, his time on Dante’s Cove – and more!

AfterElton.com: How did you end up on the show?
Gregory Michael: Wow, let's see, was it Thursday? Or Wednesday? My manager called me, literally an hour before the audition, and said, "Get your butt over to CBS Radford." So I came over and I met with the people from casting, had an audition. Next morning at ten o'clock, I went in and met with Michael Lange, our director, and I guess they liked me. They said, "Hey, that's it. You're our guy." So that was pretty much it.

AE: Did you read with Paul James [who plays Calvin] at all?
GM: No. I'd never met Paul up until today. Actually, he's an awesome guy. He's a Syracuse grad, my sister went to Syracuse, and we're both East Coast guys. He's from Maryland; I'm from Philly. We hit it off pretty good. I like him a lot actually.

AE: So today was the first time you've met him?
GM: First time, yeah. And there was that awkward moment when your co-star and you are like, "Oh God, is it going to work?" Because you know, you have to have chemistry on set, not just in a relationship, but also with your fellow actors. You're like, "Oh man, I hope it's going to be good." We hit it off right away. He's so cool. I'm really, really pleased. So far things are going so good. [laughs]

GM: Thank you!

Last night's American Idol started out with Ryan Seacrest declaring it a battle between "Conway and California", "the acoustic rocker versus the glam rocker", and "the guy next door versus the guyliner".

It took every ounce of strength, but somehow I kept watching after that. I was rewarded with two guys trying their best to get through the biggest moment in their lives, and having to deal with the added stress of performing one of the most craptastic songs ever written.

Both guys had to perform three songs; their favorite song of the season, a song picked by Idol creator Simon Fuller and ... a song co-written by judge Kara.

Adam went with Mad World (which for many people was the song that catapulted him into stardom), the Simon Fuller pick A Change is Gonna Come (and brought the house down), and ... the Kara song.

Kris did Ain't No Sunshine, the Simon Fuller pick What's Going On? (and his performance was a little too peppy for me considering it's a serious protest song), and ... the Kara song.

Okay ... that Kara song. Is it just me, or did both guys look like it was painful for them to have to sing it? It seemed to fit Kris's style more than Adam, though.

Scott came out to Chris while in his first year at NYU. “I was driving him back to New York City for school,” Chris says. “We spent the whole day together, got to the city, had some beers in my hotel room, got into a really great talk, and he came out. I was so glad that he did. That’s got to be a difficult transition, but I come from the most liberal household you have ever heard of … I think my mother was praying for [both of] us to be gay, so at least she got one of us.”

Olympian Ian Thorpe 'draws a line' under gay innuendos

One of Australia's best-known sporting heroes has issued a statement after press speculation about the nature of his relationship with a fellow swimmer.

Ian Thorpe, known as the 'Thorpedo', won five Olympic gold medals for Australia and eleven World Championship golds. He retired in 2006.

The 26-year-old has been the victim of persistent rumours about his sexuality.

A recent month-long holiday with close friend, longtime housemate and fellow swimmer and Daniel Mendes let to more press speculation.

Yesterday Mr Thorpe spoke out.

"Over the last few days there have been a series of press articles published speculating about my friendship with Daniel Mendes," he said.

"I am still friends with many of the people I competed and trained with during my swimming career.

"Daniel is one such good friend whom I have known for many years.

"I have only commented on this issue at this time because I draw a line when innuendo implicates people like my family and my friends.

"I find this kind of inaccurate speculation tiresome and I am annoyed by the hurt it has caused those closest to me."

Mr Thorpe said in 2006 that he did not mind being a gay icon.

Speaking to Foxtel TV network, he said:

"People can think whatever they want to think and people will tell you black and blue that I am gay.

"There is no basis for what they are saying. It's no big deal because that doesn't affect any part of my life.

"I don't care what people are saying in that regard because it doesn't mean when I get in my car I worry about what's going to happen today or am I being followed. It's not embarrassing."

Mr Thorpe has his own jewellery line and fragrance and has worked as an 'ambassador' for Armani.

At the 2008 Olympics Matthew Mitcham, an Australian diver, was the only out gay male athlete competing. He won gold in the 10m event.

European Parliament opts to extend anti-discrimination legislation

The European Parliament today voted to extend anti-discrimination protections beyond employment to cover goods, facilities and services.

Previously, provisions only applied to discrimination on sexual orientation, age, disability or religion in the workplace.

The extension on legal protection will apply to areas such as healthcare and commercial services.

It is designed as an addition to existing rules which currently only protects certain groups from discrimination or only in certain situations.

The Swedish government, which will be next to take up presidency of the EU, signalled last week it intended to implement the new provisions.

Emine Bozkurt, a Dutch member of European Parliament who led the negotiations on the issue for the European Social-Democrats, described the win as a "wonderful victory" for human rights.

She said: "Throughout the EU people are still discriminated, they are denied insurance, education or a home just because of their age, religion or sexual orientation.

"Furthermore, at the moment only three countries in Europe have legislation against multiple-discrimination.

"This means for example that a gay woman in a wheelchair who is discriminated will usually be forced to choose on what ground she suspects the discrimination took place when she files a formal complaint.

"Thanks to Social-Democrat proposals people will no longer be forced to make such an absurd choice."

Jean Lambert, London's Green MEP, said: "I am very proud that we succeeded in getting a Parliament majority to support this extension of legal protection against discrimination beyond the labour market.

"This is a long overdue victory for the millions of people across Europe at risk of discrimination on grounds of their age, disability, sexual orientation or faith or belief.

"Despite the obvious benefits of greater equality in all areas of society, it has taken months of hard work to win support for the new legislation in the European Parliament. In the face of external pressure, I am delighted that a clear majority voted for these new rules."

Interview with "Survivor"'s Spencer Duhm

***Spoiler Warning*** This interview contains spoilers about Thursday night’s episode of Survivor: Tocantins.

For the first four episodes of Survivor: Tocantins, Spencer Duhm, at nineteen-years-old the youngest Survivor competitor ever, mostly flew under the radar as his team did fairly well in the challenges. Spencer worked hard, didn’t make any enemies, and also kept the fact he was a gay man from his teammates. Therefore it was rather surprising when he was voted off his tribe on Thursday’s episode. Indeed, given his age, fitness, and devotion to the game, many had pegged him to go much further.

AfterElton.com caught up with him the day after his elimination to discuss his strategy, his relationship with previous Survivor winner Todd Herzog, as well as his controversial statements about what kind of gay guy he considers himself.

AfterElton.com: Hi Spencer, thanks so much for talking to us.
Spencer Duhm: Thank you.

AE: Let's talk about some remarks you made to RealityBlurred.com before you went on the show. You said things like, "I don’t come across like most of the gay guys...I won’t be Todd, I surely won’t be Coby. I won’t be Charlie." And "I talked to my parents and I was like, ‘Mom, do I sound like that?’ she was like, ‘Sweetheart, no, I would never let you go out in public if you sounded like that.’ Thank God." These comments really offended many of our readers. They felt as if there were examples of internalized homophobia. How would you respond to that and do you still feel that way?
SD: Well, okay, first of all, let me talk about my mom. She got a lot of flak for that. The way I said it and the way it actually happened were different. All the things I had her say when I quoted her, she didn't actually say. I jokingly said, "Mom, you wouldn't let me go out in public, right?" And she said, "No, Sweetheart." It was all me there. I didn't know it was going to be printed, so I wasn't being factual, but she got a lot of flak for saying nothing, just agreeing with what I said. I felt horrible for that. She's my mom! She's not like that.

Obviously, though, when I read that, especially the stuff about Charlie, I was mortified. My jaw dropped and I was yelling at my computer, screaming, "Shut up, Spencer! Shut up! Why are you saying that?" I've apologized. It's just one of those things where it happens and you learn from it. You realize the press always has that tape recorder going.

I'd never want to offend people like that, it was never my goal, and I obviously wish I'd never said that stuff, but it just sort of comes out. I don't have any homophobia. I've just had experiences in my life where people have judged me because I'm gay and they immediately assume I'm a fairy or something. And I'm like, "No, we have gay people who aren't..." Again, not to use a word that might offend people or get me in trouble again, but you know... fruity, or whatever, but there are some of us who aren't. I feel like every time people find out you're gay they just assume you're going to be a drag queen or something. That irritates me because I don't stereotype other people and I don't want to be stereotyped myself. That's where that all came from. I honestly didn't mean to offend anyone but I can understand why it did. I wish I hadn't said those things. I don't like to be mean to people I've never even met, like Charlie, but there's nothing else I can do about it now.

AE: You never came out to your tribe, which you discussed in interviews on the last episode. You said, "In the culture that we live in, there's not much to gain from people finding out you're gay." Obviously you're out in your real life, since you spoke so openly about being gay in the interviews, so were you referring specifically to the culture in the context of the game, or do you feel that way in general?
SD: I feel like there's still some prejudice out there. I've experienced and I know others have, too. I mean, we've come a long way, but this is a social game and you don't want to give anyone even a subconscious reason to want to get rid of you or have something against you. You don't want to give them that. That's why I didn't tell anybody, it wasn't because I was ashamed of it or because I thought there would be prejudice, I just didn't know.

Until you tell them, you don't know. It's out of your control. They didn't give me any reason to think they'd be prejudiced. I feel like in some of the interviews they've done, they've gotten flak. 'Oh, were they homophobes?' No, they weren't. I just didn't know, so there was no reason to tell them.

Out at the Movies: "I Love You, Man," "The New Twenty"

Relax, you don't have to see that inane new Nicolas Cage movie when two notable films of queer interest are opening on the same weekend.

The big opener this weekend is, of course, I Love You, Man, the same-sex love story for straight guys. Paul Rudd stars as Peter, a newly-affianced man who realizes that he doesn't have any male friends close enough to be considered for the best-man gig. With the encouragement of his bride-to-be (Rashida Jones) and some tips from his hetero-chasing gay brother (Andy Samberg), Peter enters into a relationship with loose-cannon Sydney (Jason Segel). Wackiness — and a lot of laughs — ensue.

Samberg's character ranks alongside the gays on The Sarah Silverman Program as the smart new comic approach to screen queers in that he's just a dude. It's nice to know that Hollywood is starting to figure out that we homos come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments.

And speaking of toying with the paradigm, festival fave The New Twenty opens in Los Angeles this weekend. It's a smartly-written movie about college pals panicking as they hit their 30s, but one of the things that I find most interesting about the film is that the ripped guy who often goes shirtless is actually one of the straight characters, while the gays are either bearish, Asian or middle-aged — and, to a man, sexy. (And usually invisible in other movies.)

TRAVEL: Argentine Tango Returns to Roots

Old pictures of Buenos Aires at the turn of the last century show hundreds of men, mostly Italian immigrants, in deep embraces on the streets, smiling as they tango with one another. It's not that the city was gay-friendly back then. Instead, tango was considered so obscene at the time that women never dared to dance it.

Still, with tango the symbol of modern Argentina, when the 2nd Annual International Gay Tango Festival held its event in Buenos Aires in early December, participants were both turning the dance on its head and going back to its same-sex roots.

The event, cosponsored by the gay male tango ensemble La Marshall and the lesbian group Tango Queer, was held in venues gay and straight throughout the city. Most attendees were locals, but New Yorkers were represented as well.

Axel Dremer, a Buenos Aires native who now lives in New York, found it both exhilarating and challenging to be at the festival, especially the night at Confiteria Ideal, one of the city's most traditional tango venues. Full of marble columns, stained glass, and bronze, along with the aura of tradition that regulates the male and the female gender roles in the dance, the location has been used in movies like the 1998 "Tango," and in the scenes where Madonna and Antonio Banderas tango and argue in the 1996 film "Evita."

"It made me very nervous to dance with another guy, because this is a traditional place," Dremer said. But as the night progressed, he became more comfortable. "I know many people here are not queer, but they are open-minded if they are watching it. But it's such a strong symbol here."

Sid Grant, a New York tango instructor who has been traveling to Buenos Aires since 1999, felt that "nothing replaces both studying and dancing in Buenos Aires. It's like soaking tango into your pores by osmosis." He came with his dance partner Shahin Medghalchi, a straight woman from Santa Fe.

The blending of gay, lesbian, and straight dancers goes to the heart of the increasing popularity of gay tango in Buenos Aires and the way in which it breaks the strict gender rules inherent in the dance. Straight dancers come to gay tango events in order to better understand the male lead and female following roles.

"The dancer is just another instrument in the dance, so you have to use your instrument," Grant noted, adding, "When you are in another person's arms, you have to pay attention regardless of the gender."

Other Americans came from San Francisco, including the straight female dance ensemble Tango Con*Fusion, who were performance guests of the festival. Ensemble member Christy Cote, at Ideal, commented that it was probably "the first time in a hundred years that women have ever danced here together." She said that some of the straight couples at the event appeared uncomfortable at first, but grew to like what they saw. Cote said that one older gentleman, after watching the six women dance together, told her, "You know, I have to tell you that was pretty good."

Not quite an entrenched tradition yet, the event is still finding its place in Buenos Aires. Mariana Docampo Falcon from Tango Queer worried about the smaller numbers of foreigners attending this year, perhaps due to the worldwide economic problems. "Last year, there were more tourists. Many people didn't come" from other countries who had planned to, she said. Still, she was happy with the overall event, and the way it was spread across the city.

Augusto Balizano of La Marshall felt that this year, even with fewer people, "the festival was more complete." If the economy does not improve in time for next year's festival, he said, "I don't have a clue how it will turn out." While the organizers did not have specific numbers on attendance, the observations of this reporter indicate it's likely no more than 300 different people in total were at the various events.

Regardless of the actual numbers, gay tango - along with other forms of increased gay visibility - is part of the changing landscape of gay rights in Buenos Aires, where civil unions have been recognized since 2003, a first for a Latin American city. Though there is no financial help from the city, the event receives recognition as culturally significant and can use a city logo on promotional material.

"Now Buenos Aires is very open," Docampo Falcon said. "The city sponsored us. People are open now. It is not like before."

With gay tango on the rise, it is not hard to imagine that one day those 100-year-old photos of dozens of men dancing on the street will become a reality once more in modern Argentina, but with a completely different meaning.

Chris Evans On Gay Bars, Gay Marriage And His Man-Crush (Yes, He Admits To Having One)

Chris Evans, the hunky actor who in my opinion was the most fantastic of The Fantastic Four (how many other men could rock blue tights like he did?) and will soon be seen as a man with telekinetic powers in Push, just did a great interview with The Advocate in which he reveals himself to be a charming, gay-friendly guy. If you were simply in lust with him before, you'll be in love with him now.

Turns out his younger brother Scott is gay, and Chris spends a lot of time hanging out with him and his buddies. He has yet to go to a gay bar with the bunch, though. "They've invited me to gay bars before, and I said, 'Look, guys, I've got to draw the line there.' That's where a photo will get taken, it will run in magazines, and before you know it, I'll be living down the gay rumor for the rest of my life," he tells The Advocate.

Scott came out to Chris' mother and sister when he was in college, then he came out to Chris a little later. "I was so glad that he did. That's got to be a difficult transition, but I come from the most liberal household you have ever heard of. And for some reason, gay men are just drawn to my mother. She's a cool chick. I think, like, six men have come out to her. I guess they just feel so comfortable with her, and before you know it, they're coming out of the closet," Chris says, adding, "I think my mother was praying for us to be gay, so at least she got one of us."

While Chris isn't gay (he almost played gay in Milk but lost out on the role of Harvey Milk's partner to James Franco), he admits to having a man-crush. "My buddies always tell me that I have a man-crush on Brad Pitt. What can I say? The guy's great. I think he's a great fuckin' actor, and he's versatile as all hell," Chris praises. "I've never seen a movie I don't like him in. So I guess he's my man-crush."

Like Brad, Chris is one of our straight allies in the battle for gay marriage. "As for gay marriage, it's mindbloggling and appalling that human beings are denied being civil rights in this country," Chris says. "But time will heal all. I have to believe that in 10 years we won't be having this conversation."

The New York Post recently had an article that centered around the sort-of…pretty much… yeah…self-centered Kayne West and how he has “evolved” in his views of gay people…I think? Kanye has been pretty good about standing up, as an African-American popster, and saying that people are just that…people, whether they are gay or straight, but sometimes he sure does have a funny way of saying it.

The article states that Kanye regrets that he once stated, “Gays really know how to dress”, because he obviously made a more recent comment to MTV stating, “That’s when I was ignorant to gays. Because there’s a lot of gay people who don’t dress good at all. There’s a lot of gay people that I dress way better than.”

Well Kayne, I’m glad to know you’re no longer “ignorant” to gays. Hell, if you ever want, give me a call, we could hang out and you could show me how to dress and stuff…seriously!

Gay Asians criticize Oscar speech's TV censorship

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Gay Asians voiced indignation Wednesday after television broadcasts of the Academy Awards in their region censored the words "gay" and "lesbian" in speeches that called for equal rights for homosexuals.

The speeches by actor Sean Penn and writer Dustin Lance Black — who won Oscars for their work in "Milk" — were shown in full during live broadcasts of the Oscars that were screened across Asia on Monday morning.

But viewers who caught recorded telecasts in the evening on STAR, an Asian satellite TV service that says it reaches more than 300 million viewers in 53 countries, noticed that the sound was removed whenever both men mentioned "gay" or "lesbian."

The directors of a conference hall who cancelled a press conference by a gay organisation for "security reasons" should resign.

Marko Karadžić, minister for human rights in the Serbian government, said the behaviour of the Sava Centre was unacceptable.

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) news conference was due to take place at the New Belgrade premises.

The cancellation caused a protest of Alliance activists.

"What surprised me is that is that such discriminatory opinions, which made the news conference impossible, were explained in that way—that means neither the place, nor the hall were a problem, but only the organiser and the theme which was to be discussed at the press conference," said Mr Karadžić.

David Beckham subjected to homophobic abuse during England match

An international match between Spain and England was marred by homophobic chanting, according to the Gay Football Supporters Network.

In the 78th minute of Wednesday's match in Seville the crowd started chanting "Beckham maricón" which means "Beckham faggot."

England's black players have previously been targeted by racist Spanish fans during previous internationals.

The incident has been reported to FIFA and the English FA by GFSN.

In England indecent or racist chanting is an offence under the Football Offences Act 1991 and carries a fine of up to £1,000 and a football banning order.

GFSN took part in the first conference of the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation on tackling

"Homophobia is still rife in football and it as great to see so many different groups committed to doing something about it," said Chris Basiurski, campaigns officer for the GFSN.

"It became obvious very quickly the UK has progressed further on this issue than the rest of Europe, mainly due to the cooperation of the English FA and we look forward to working with the other European gay football groups in the coming years.

"This week's homophobic abuse of David Beckham at the Spain v England international highlights the need for action and in the long term we hope to show that such behaviour is not acceptable."

The European Parliament is pushing the 27 member states of the European Union to do better in treating Gay people equally.

The parliament adopted a report January 14 that urged member nations to recognize each other's same-sex partnerships and marriages, and condemned homophobic hate speech by political and religious leaders.

The report also calls on the European Commission to propose legislation to criminalize anti-Gay hate crimes, guarantee the right of free movement within the EU for same-sex couples, and assure that Gay people seeking asylum from anti-Gay nations receive it.

The parliament further requested that a study be done to gauge the level of harassment and violence experienced by Transsexuals in the 27 nations.

The European Union is composed of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

At least 14 of the nations allow same-sex marriage or have civil-union or registered-partnership laws that grant some, most or all of the rights and obligations of marriage to same-sex couples.

In related news, Thomas Hammarberg, the human rights commissioner for the 47-nation Council of Europe, recently denounced the mistreatment of Transgender people in member nations.

"Some people seem to have a problem with the mere existence of human beings whose outer expression of their inner gender identity is not the same as their gender determined at birth," Hammarberg said. "Aggression against Transgender persons cannot however be excused as resulting from ignorance or lack of education. These attitudes cause serious harm to innocent and vulnerable people and must therefore be countered. ... There is no excuse for not immediately granting this community their full and unconditional human rights."

"Council of Europe member states should take all necessary concrete action to ensure that Transphobia is stopped and that Transgender persons are no longer discriminated against in any field," he said.

Waking up a few days ago, the TV on as usual, I was going through the Bulgarian television morning shows when I heard something that grabbed my attention. The studio presenter said: “And now we go to our correspondent in the village of X to tell us the story of how a gay couple who decided to settle there was chased away by the villagers who did not want to have gay people there.”

Hey, I thought, this is something new. It got even better: “The partners are a Bulgarian and an Icelandic national.” Hmm, a foreigner involved, I thought, what could be more interesting. I immediately started drawing pictures in my head of how the gay couple arrived in the remote village and started scandalising the locals, only to get a fist in the face and a kick in the back. There have been plenty of movies with such a plot.

The TV presenter obviously had the same idea, because she was very eager to get to the angry villagers and ask them questions about the “gay couple”.
So was the correspondent sent to investigate this case of intolerance. TV cameras showed the correspondent surrounded by a group of people, mostly young, quietly standing there, not holding any swastikas or pitchforks.

The TV presenter asked the first question: “Are these the first gay people in your village?”
The answer was simple. “Yes, we have never had gays before, but we have nothing against them and we don’t mind if they stay because I don’t care what they want to do or how.”

The presenter was obviously disappointed, because this answer did not fit the way the story had been presented.
“But have you had problems with the gay couple?” she said. “No, not a single problem,” came the reply. “We think that the golf course will be good for the village.”

Golf course? What golf course, I thought.
It turns out that the couple had bought a house in the village a few years ago and this past summer decided to explore opportunities for building a golf course in the area and advertising it in Iceland. The Bulgarian partner was on the phone from Iceland, confirming the information and saying that the couple was, in fact, living in Iceland full-time and that they simply had property in the village and did not really live there.

"We have never been called names by the villagers,” he said, disappointing the TV presenter even more. The correspondent in the village, however, decided to justify the expenses of being sent there and turned to a young girl. “So, how did you live with the gay couple? Were you friends?”
“No, we weren’t. We actually had problems and did not understand each other well.”

This certainly grabbed the correspondent’s attention. “What do you mean, you did not have a good understanding with the couple?”
“Well, I don’t speak English and that’s why I could not talk to the foreign guy,” the girl said.
The correspondent would not give up. “But if you had to vote for the Bulgarian partner in the gay couple as mayor, would you choose him? “Yes, sure, why not?”
The TV presenter then ran out of time and terminated the live broadcast.

While we often get our info from the more reputable (or perhaps we should say recognizable) sources like the NY Post or Perez Hilton, once in a while we stumble across a juicy tidbit about one of our homo obsessions on a decidedly humbler site.

Like when we learned about John Barrowman canoodling with his co-stars at a recent Torchwood convention in Northampton, UK, on a fan's LiveJournal page.

The best part of the recap was lots of snapshots of the gang (including Gareth David-Lloyd, Kal Owen, and Naoko Mori) stripping down to their skivvies, engaging in several sloppy bouts of French kissing, and discussing what they want for Christmas (with David-Lloyd hopping on Barrowman's knee and asking "Santa" for a Porsche).

That show's cast is nothing if not eager to please an audience. How no one else attending seemed to have a camera at hand or a blog to post them to is a mystery for another day...

Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 to fight California’s Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in the state.

“Because no one has the right to deny another their life even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another, and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8,” the 44-year-old actor said in a statement.

Political strategist Chad Griffin, who is coordinating efforts in the entertainment industry to defeat the measure, added, “It is our hope that others in the entertainment industry will step up and match Brad Pitt’s heroic commitment to quality and defeating Prop. 8. This isn’t a special interest issue - this measure affects every business and every family. With California’s budget and the national economy in chaos, the last thing we need is an unnecessary measure that threatens health benefits and protections for children.”

Младият левент решил да позира „актово“ по случай предстоящото издание на „Пирин фолк“.

За да може фолклорната музика да бъде поднесена „модерно, секси и да достигне бързо и до по-голям брой потребители“.

“Ако повече млади момчета, които пеят професионално фолклор се снимат като мен, аз съм сигурен, че поп фолк певиците, които разчитат на визията си и “подобренията” си ще останат в историята”, коментира своите снимки младият Карамфил.

Статистиката показвала, че голяма част от феновете на поп фолка, са предимно момичета, които бързо могат да бъдат привлечени от един млад, красив и талантлив изпълнител и то само на фолклорни песни, твърдят от телевизия М САТ, по чиято идея съблекли Карамфил.

Божиков ще се изяви на сцената на „Пирин фолк“ в Сандански с популярната македонска песен “Мома седи”. Дали ще е гол по топка, докато пее за момата, не е ясно.

Това ще е третото по ред участие на Карамфил на фестивалната сцена и се надява след представянето си да подпише договор с голяма музикална компания.

Засега продуцент на Карамфил е кметът на Струмяни Валентин Чиликов.

А иначе освен фолклора и позирането по топка, Карамфил е запален и по футбола. Досега младежът-изпълнител и местна секс икона е ритал за третодивизионния “Атлетик” – Благоевград.

Сега му предстояло да подпише договор с футболен клуб от съседна Гърция. Освен ако вероятно не му предложат работа от голяма музикална компания.

Thousands at Swindon Gay Pride

SWINDON, August 16, 2008 – Thousands turned out for the first-ever Swindon Gay Pride, held today in the Town Gardens.

The event, centred on the “Bowl” stage, featured a host of entertainers – with one singer, Charlene – coming all the way from California.

Organisers had promised “something for everyone” in the ten-hour programme. And this was the case.

In addition to singers, bands and drag queens (Miss Trixie and Miss Sandra were joint “mistresses of ceremonies”), there was a modern ballet performance by Swindon Dance.

As an alternative, the bandstand had performances by the Wootton Basset Brass Band and a local jazz band.

Councillor Rod Bluh, the leader of the Swindon Borough Council said that it was hoped that the town “can fully express its desire to create an open and accepting community that is built on relationships rather than stereotypical assumptions and fears”.

“Swindon Pride is about our community," he continued. “It is about accepting that our families, businesses and school, neighbourhoods and social networks, involve and include lesbians, gay men, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual people.

“It is about saying that no one need live in fear because of who they are. ”Entertainment was due to continue until 10.30pm

Всичко започна, когато Министърът за защита на човешките и малцинствените права в Сърбия Светозар Чиплич съобщи за проекта, който има за цел да подобри толерантността в средните училища, тъй като според него тази част от сръбското население е най-мразената сред младите и трябва да й се помогне да се "включи в политическия, социален и професионален живот на Сърбия". Чиплич освен това допълни, че за да стане тази акция ефективна, неговото министерство трябва да получи помощта на държавните агенции и неправителствените организации. The events of forth Moscow Gay Pride will take place on May 15-17, 2009 when Russian capital will host the Eurovision song contest, which traditionally attracts the attention of the LGBT community in Europe.

Manifestation of Moscow Gay Pride to which Mayors of Paris, London and Berlin are invited will take place on Saturday 16 May, on the day of Eurovision final. It will be dedicated to the International Day against homophobia which is celebrated on 17 May around the world.

	Splash, the gay bar of West 17th Street, was among 13 establishments hit with either enforcement or major inspection actions on the Friday evening leading into Pride Weekend; only three of the 13 had gay-related events planned for the weekend.

City inspections and closings of nightlife businesses that took place on New York City's gay pride weekend do not appear to have singled out gay establishments.

On June 27, the police department's legal unit temporarily closed Pacha and Marquee, two Manhattan nightclubs scheduled to hold gay parties that weekend, after undercover police officers made drug buys in them. Following the closings, organizers scrambled to move the gay parties to other venues.

A detective, identified in court records only by a number, bought cocaine from two different Marquee employees seven times since January 5. In Pacha, undercover officers made ten drug buys, including cocaine, special K, marijuana, and ecstasy, since August 11 of last year.

Salman Husainy was distraught.

The gay Pakistani native, who grew up in Central California, was struggling to reconcile his Muslim faith - which is an integral part of his life - with his sexuality, which is condemned by his faith.

At the same time, the then 18-year-old was pressured by family expectations to marry, have kids and pass on the family name.

"I tried to suppress it as much as I could. I wanted to make my family happy. But it didn't work," says the 33-year-old Long Beach resident. "I felt like I was suffocating inside."

Husainy found solace away from home when he attended the University of California at Irvine. He was able to think independently of his family and faith and ready to confront himself, he says.

Depending on who you ask, lovely Lyon is either France’s third biggest city (Marseille packs more people into its city boundaries) or its second (Lyon’s got the larger metro area). But what's beyond dispute (save maybe for among disgruntled Parisians) is that Lyon is the capital of gastronomy – not just in France, but perhaps even on the whole planet.

Home to the world-renowned and Michelin-star-accoladed foodie empire of local son Paul Bocuse, Lyon is also the birthplace of the bouchon, the friendly and fatty commoner-style cooking borne of the silk trade that flourished here from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Lying at the juncture of two major rivers (the Rhône and the Saône), the Lyon area has been a strategic city-spot since Celtic times, when the Gauls donned it Lugdunon in a nod to their sun god. The conquering Romans came in 43 BCE, Latinizing things to Lugdunum and turning the growing city into an important empire outpost (the emperor Claudius was actually born here, the first to be birthed outside Italy). In medieval times the city grew downward from the Fourvière hillside to form what’s now known as Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), a beautifully preserved district on the Saône’s west bank. Lyon’s growth eastward rather than atop itself over the last two millennia means it offers the unique chance to glimpse several distinct periods of history in one place, which in 1998 led UNESCO to designate much of the city as a World Heritage site.

EU backs gay man's pension rights

A gay man in Germany may be entitled to his dead partner's pension following a ruling by the highest court in the EU.

Tadao Maruko's partner died in 2005 but the pension fund refused him a widower's pension and the case was sent to the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

The court ruled that refusing a pension was direct discrimination if the partnership was comparable to marriage.

The ruling will apply to countries which recognise same-sex marriage

Mr Maruko's lawyers predict the case will have repercussions in EU countries where same-sex partnerships are legal.

"I'm happy. It's a very important step," lawyer Helmut Graupner told the BBC News website.

"This will help all those countries which have registered partnerships. It's the first time the ECJ has ruled in favour of same-sex couples."

The court based its ruling on an EU directive which states that there should be no discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.

Although German law considers only heterosexual unions as marriage, the ruling makes it clear that any country in the EU that gives same-sex couples rights equivalent to marriage should treat the two as comparable.

The European Commission welcomed the decision, but emphasised that national governments rather than the EU were in charge of legislation on family law.

"It all depends on the law of the country. The right to a survivor's pension exists if the two regimes [marriage and gay partnership] are analogous," said commission spokesman Johannes Laitenberger.

European repercussions

Mr Graupner said the ruling would have significant repercussions for the UK and Scandinavia where same-sex partners had "mirror institutions" to marriage, rather than French-style civil contracts.

But he also suggested that indirectly it would help gay couples in countries where there was no equivalent to marriage.

"The next case may be one of indirect discrimination, from a country that excludes same-sex partners from the rights and obligations of marriage.

"The way out for such a country would mean they would have to provide the same benefits as other countries," he said.

Малка частица гей история бе сътворена в турската столица миналата събота следобед.

Над 100 гей мъже и жени, бисексуални и транссексуални се събраха пред паметника на човешките права на ул. „Юксел” в организиран поход до парламента. Повода бе 17 май - международния ден срещу хомофобията. Организацията бе дело на гей и лесбийската асоциация Каос и асоциация Pink Life.

Към местните активисти се присъединиха Майкъл Кашман, президент на смесенопартийната група за равни права за хомосексуалните към Европейският парламент, и датската феминистка Аня Мойленбелт.

Похода премина с минимални затруднения. Полицаите, които числено превъзхождаха демонстриращите, спряха участниците и настояха да свалят знамената и плакатите.

След като се подчиниха на демонстрантите бе разрешено да продължат. Събитието мина без други проблеми.

„Имаше едва сто души, което ми напомни как ние, в страни като Англия, получаваме права даром,” коментира Кашман. „Тези турски мъже и жени са герои и борци, готови да поставят себе си на фронтовата линия, за да получат равенство. Никога няма да забравя тях и солидарността ни.”

First Ever Gay March Held in Ankara

ANKARA, May 22, 2008 – A little bit of gay history was made in the Turkish capital on Saturday afternoon.

Over 100 gay men and women, bisexuals and transgender people assembled in front of the human rights monument in Yuksel Street for a march to Parliament on International Day Against Homophobia jointly organised by Kaos Gay and Lesbian Association and Pink Life LGBTT Association.

Joining local activists were Michael Cashman MRP, the president of the European Parliament’s all-party Intertroup for gay and lesbian rights, and Dutch feminist and author Anja Meulenbelt.

The march encountered minor difficulty. The police, who outnumbered the demonstrators, stopped the march and demanded that the rainbow flags and banners be taken down.

Marchers agreed and were then allowed to continue. There were not other problems.

“I found these two days and in particular the march deeply moving,” said Mr. Cashman.

“There were barely one hundred of us, and it was a reminder to me of how we in countries like the UK take our rights for granted.

“Those Turkish women and men on that march are heroes and warriors who are prepared to put themselves on the front line to achieve equality. I will never forget them and our sense of solidarity.”

Mr. Cashman also spoke at Friday’s conference on LGBT rights and IDAHO where he said that with “courage and conviction”, equality will become a reality.

Earlier on Friday, Mr. Cashman had a meeting with The Queen, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband and the Prime Minister of Turkey. The Queen was on a state visit to Turkey.

Pierre et Gilles give Sofia a new take on the art icon

The exhibition of Pierre et Gilles at Sofia City Art Gallery marks the first time that the French duo has had a show in Eastern Europe. The artists are best known for their combination of photography with painting, using pop culture, religious, Classical and kitsch motifs that all come together for a sort of surrealist adult fairytale.

At a news conference held at the gallery the morning of May 9, the day before the exhibition opened to the public, French ambassador to Bulgaria Etienne de Poncins said that this was the “flagship moment” for the embassy and the French Institute this year.

“The likes of Pierre et Gilles has never been seen before in Sofia,” he said, “neither with the quality of the art, nor with its originality. In a country of icons, we are able to give honour to two artists who are themselves icons, and these among personalities that themselves address icons, such as Sylvie Vartan.”

Showing contemporary art is one of the constant goals of the French embassy, De Poncins said. Next year, it is already planned for sculptor Pierre-Marie Lejeune to come to Sofia.

Also at the news conference were Sofia City Art Gallery director Adelina Fileva, French Institute director Catherine Suard, Assen Assenov from the magazine Edno, and Parisian gallerist Jérôme de Noirmont, who curated the show, which runs until June 6.

Assenov expressed his wonder at the presence of the Pierre-Gilles tandem before him, saying that it was “exceptional and extraordinary” to have them here in Bulgaria. He said that this show permitted Sofia to try to be more and more a European cultural capital.

After being lauded, Pierre and Gilles showed attendees around the gallery, answering questions and explaining certain aspects of their work.

Pierre is the photographer; Gilles does the decoration and the painting on the photos themselves. Their collaboration dates back to 1976, when they produced their first work; since then, they have made more than 800 pieces, using as models names that include Catherine Deneuve, Naomi Campbell, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, Jean-Paul Gautier, Boy George, Sylvie Vartan, Nina Hagen, David Bowie and Kylie Minogue.

In Sofia, there are 50 works that date from 1978 to 2008, among which figure two featuring Vartan, given her special role in helping to free the Bulgarian medics from Libya in 2007.

За първи път имената на Пиер и Жил попаднаха буквално в ръцете ми от корицата на албум на Taschen от серията Icons („Икони”). Темата на албума е “Sailors and Sea” (Моряци и море) и съдържа произведенията на дуото, посветени на тая тематика. Още с първите разлистени страници разбрах защо са влезли именно в „Икони”. Творчеството на Пиер и Жил се състои от икони. Те взимат икони и ги увековечават в бляскави и екстравагантни шедьоври.

Пиер Комой и Жил Бланшар са съответно фотограф и художник, гей двойка в живота и в работата си. Автори са на около 800 изключителни фотографии-рисунки изработени по техника, подобна на тази на гениалния чешки фотограф Ян Саудек. Двамата измислят пищни и причудливи сюжети за своите фотографии, скицират ги, избират модел, Жил оформя декора, Пиер снима и накрая отново Жил ретушира и оцветява избраният внимателно кадър така, че да бъде уникален. И творбите им наистина са. Цените на оригиналите им надхвърлят 70 000 евро. В творбите си са запечатали десетки икони на поп културата — Мадона, Мерилин Менсън, Катрин Деньов, Наоми Кембъл, Жан-Пол Готие, Силви Вартан, Кайли Миноуг, Дейвид Бауи, Бой Джордж, Нина Хаген и много други.

Двамата са заедно вече 30 години. 30 години, през които стилът им не се е променил особено: еклектичен, повлиян еднакво както от изисканата и пищна класика на рококо, сецесиона, бароковата театралност и игра със светлини и сенки, така и от модерният дух на поп-арта, нео-готик стилистиката и гей културата; и всичко това, движещо се по ръба на кича, а твърде често и на благоприличието.

Изложбата на двамата в България е първата им самостоятелна изложба в държава от Югоизточна Европа. Ще се състои от 10 май до 6 юни 2008 г. в Софийска градска художествена галерия, ул. Гурко 1. Организатори са Списание 1 (които напоследък проявяват особено внимание не само към еко, но и към гей темите) и Френския институт в София.

Пиер и Жил в дати (от сп. “1″)

Пиер е роден в Ла Рош сюр Йон през 1950 г., а Жил в Хавър през 1953 г.. В началото на 70-те години Жил получава диплома от Хавърското Училище за Изящни изкуства, докато Пиер изучава фотография в Женева. През 1974 г. Жил води едногодишна кореспонденция с Анет Месаже, премества се в Париж, където рисува, прави колажи, колекционира снимките от фотоматон и прави илюстрации за списания и реклама. След военната си служба през 1973 г. Пиер започва да работи в Париж като фотограф за списанията Rock & Folk, Dépêche Mode и Interview.

1976-1981
През пролетта на 1976 г. Пиер и Жил се срещат на откриването на бутик Kenzo в Париж и заживяват заедно. Техният апартамент-ателие се намира на улица Блан Манто в Париж. От 1977 г. за тях изглежда очевидна идеята да работят заедно. Пиер снима, а Жил рисува, всеки се намесва в работата на другия. Техните снимки за вестник Façade ги правят известни за широката публика. Те снимат Анди Уорхол, Салватор Дали, Мик Джагър, Ив Сен Лоран и Иги Поп. Първа серия на Гримасите, като модели са техни приятели. 1978 г. отбелязва началото на периода Палас, култовият сериал, за който те изготвят афишите и поканите … През 1979 г. се преместват в квартала на Бастилията. Осъществяват първото си пътуване до Индия. Работят за Тиери Мюглер, правят обложки за дискове…

1982-1985
Реализирането на филма Адам и Ева през 1982 г. отбелязва истински обрат в тяхната работа. Те създават първия си самостоятелен сериал на Малдивите и Шри Ланка, Децата на пътешествията. През 1983 г. първа самостоятелна изложба в галерията Тексбраун в Париж с Паради и Гарсон дьо Пари. През 1984 г. излагат творбите си в „Ателие 84” в АРК-Музей на Модерното изкуство на град Париж. Множество съвместни прояви музиканти или певци (Етиен Дао, Лио, Аманда Лиър и японката Сандий) 1985 г. първия клип с групата Микадо. Изложба в Арт Гиндза Спейс в Токио.

1986-1996
Изложба на Корабокрушенци и на Ревлите през 1986 г. в галерия Самиа Саума в Париж. Те засягат темите за религията и за светците. Работят с Тома, лаоски младеж, който е техен стилист и асистент в продължение на 10 години. 1989 г. бележи началото на приятелството им с Марк Алмон, с когото реализират клип. От 1990 г. живеят и работят в Пре-Сен-Жерве. Ателието и студиото отговарят на представата за техния свят, струпването на предметите е един непрекъснат извор на вдъхновение. Двамата осъществявят многобройни пътувания в Азия. През 1992 г. излагат творбите си в Санкт Петербургския Музей на съвременното изкуство Дягилев, а през 1995 г - в Москва. През 1993 г. получават Голямата Награда за фотография на Париж. През 1994 г. те реализират сериала На ръба на Меконг в Лаос и Тайландските боксьори в Бангкок. През 1995 г. правят изложба в галерия Розлин Оксли9 в Сидни, и реализират афиша на Заговезни „Gay & Lesbian”. Работят върху Красивите негодници и Удоволствията на гората. През 1996 г. е първата ретроспекция в Европейската Къща на Фотографията в Париж, където двамата творци създават концепция за различни сценографии според избраните теми. Тази изложба има огромен успех. Каталогът, издаден от Ташен, с текстове от Бернар Маркаде и Дан Камрон, се превръща в световна референция.

1997-1999
През 1998 г. Музеят на изящните изкуства на Валенсия им посвещава ретроспекция, през декември Нежно Насилие е първата им изложба в Галерия Жером дьо Нуармон, Париж. След което - през 1999 г. те участват в изложбата и представят също така ретроспекция на творбите си в Турун Тайдемузео, Турку, Финландия.

2000
2000 година е богата на събития за тях. Посветена им е значителна изложба в рамките на салона Appearance в Болоня, двамата вземат участие в Голямата изложба „Красотата” в Авиньон., за която представят инсталация с творбите Радха и Кришна. Следва голямото признание по време на тяхната ретроспективна изложба, организирана от Дан Камрон в Ню Мюзиъм (Нов Музей на съвременното изкуство) в Ню Йорк и в Центъра за Изкуства Йерба Буена в Сан Франциско. Запознават се с Кенет Енджър и Джеймс Бидгууд, с които поддържат все така едно голямо приятелство.

2001-2004
От 9 ноември 2001 г. Изтръгни сърцето ми е тяхната втора самостоятелна изложба в галерията Жером дьо Нуармон, тази изложба ще бъде след това представена в КунстХаус (Център за изкуство) във Виена през 2002 г. В края на 2002 г. излиза публикация на Албума Пиер и Жил, произведение, съчетаващо повече от 540 творби. т 17 януари до 2 март 2003 г. е организирана ретроспекция Пиер и Жил в брюкселският Ботанически музей. След което в Ню Йорк е изложбата Пиер и Жил в галерията Робърт Милър от 14 до 28 юни 2003 г. рез 2004 г. Пиер и Жил представят своята първа ретроспекция в Азия. Красив дракон е представен първо в Сеулския музей на изкуствата (Корея), след което в Сингапурския музей на изкуствата (Сингапур). т 24 септември до 18 ноември двамата представят нова самостоятелна изложба в галерията Жером дьо Нуармон, Голямата Любов.

2005-2007
От 26 септември до 15 ноември 2005 г. за откриването на музея на съвременното изкуство на Шанхай (МСА) е представена голяма изложба Ретроспекция на Пиер и Жил. ворбата Капитан Немо е представена под патронажа на Ерик Тронси по време на изложението Силата на Изкуството, голяма изложба на артистичната сцена във Франция, организирана в Гран Пале в Париж от 10 май до 25 юни 2006 г. амостоятелна изложба Един Перфектен Свят в галерията Жером дьо Нуармон от 10 ноември 2006 г. до 10 януари 2007 г. От 20 февруари до 20 май 2007 г. Музеят Д’Орсе кани Пиер и Жил да изложат нова творба, създадена в рамките на Кореспонденции, Музеят д’Орсе/ Съвременно изкуство, Смъртта на Авел, противопоставена на Смъртта на Авел на Венсан Фьожер де Фор.

Ретроспекция от 22 февруари до 8 април 2007 г., в Московския Дом на Фотографията, Московския Манеж, след което от 20 април до 25 май в Мраморния палат на Руския музей в Санкт Петербург. Голяма изложба на ретроспекции от 26 юни до 23 септември 2007 г. в Центъра Жьо дьо Пом в Париж по случай 30 годишнината от началото на съвместния им живот и професионално сътрудничество. Публикация на нова монография на издателство Taschen.

Пиер и Жил, чиито снимки са смятани за истински гей-икони, лично дойдоха за откриването на своята първа изложба в София днес. Двамата майстори на обектива са известни с портрети в техния особен стил на Мадона, Жизел Бюндхен, Силви Вартан, но не прости, а с цветенца, птички и пчелички около тях, както и с недвусмислени изображения на травестити и голи манекени. Френският посланик Етиен дьо Понсен ги обяви за “иконографи, дошли в страната на иконите” при представянето на тандема. Експозицията на жълтите павета ще бъде отворена до 10 юни и се очаква да предизвика силен интерес заради световната известност на авторите покрай сесиите им за реклами и реномирани списания.

Le nouveau maire de Rome, l'ancien néo-fasciste Gianni Alemanno, a estimé que la gay pride était de «l'exhibition sexuelle» et que la municipalité allait «trouver une formule» pour que la manifestation «n'offense personne», rapporte la presse italienne mercredi.
«Je respecte les personnes homosexuelles, j'en connais quelques-unes et je ne fais pas dans la discrimination. Mais je crains que la gay pride soit tout autre chose, un acte d'exhibition sexuelle, et je suis opposé à toute forme d'exhibition, homosexuelle ou hétérosexuelle», a déclaré M. Alemanno. «Le problème, ce n'est pas oui ou non à l'homosexualité, mais oui ou non à l'exhibition», a ajouté Gianni Alemanno qui a ravi le 28 avril la Ville éternelle à la gauche, qu'elle dirigeait depuis quinze ans (Lire Quotidien du 29 avril). Le maire de Rome a indiqué que la gay pride ferait l'objet de discussions au conseil municipal afin de «trouver une formule qui n'offense personne».

«Ce n'est pas de l'ostentation ou une exhibition de ses orientations sexuelles, mais un moment de réflexion pour les personnes gays, lesbiennes, et transsexuelles», a dénoncé Fabrizio Marrazzo, responsable romain de la principale association de défense des homosexuels, Arcigay. «On savait que la droite italienne, la pire d'Europe, n'aimait pas cette manifestation. Mais qu'elle la conteste en l'insultant montre qu'elle ne sait pas se mesurer avec ses adversaires. Pour la droite, le bon homosexuel est celui qui se cache et ne revendique pas de droits», a déploré Franco Grillini, ex-député de gauche. Chaque année, Rome et Bologne (nord) accueillent chacune un défilé pour la défense des droits des homosexuels. Dans la capitale italienne, plusieurs dizaines de milliers de personnes avaient défilé le 16 juin 2007 lors d'une gay pride organisée par une cinquantaine d'associations et partis politiques de gauche.
