Liveblogging "One Life To Live": The mystery of Brian Joseph McElhane

Okay, what the hell is going on here? Cristian and Layla are throwing around a book called How To Tell Your Parents You're Gay by Brian Joseph McElhane (and it looks to play a part in a sitcom-esque classic "misunderstanding" today).

There's just one problem ... Brian Joseph McElhane doesn't exist.

If you Google him, the only thing you'll get is Ed's Daytime Drive-by from yesterday. Which means either TPTB on the show used "Random Author Name Generator" ... or something weird is going on. Hmm...

Anyway, join us for the fun, as Oliver hopefully will come out to Kyle, and refresh for updates.

2:05PM EST: Carlotta picks up "the book" and reads the title out loud, then slowly looks at Cristian. Cris says "mommy, wait". How cute is it that Cris calls her "mommy". Awww!

Cole is about to be shot in the back of the head by the surfer-dude blond cop. Somehow I think he'll be stopped. Rachel has been put on the stand by That Bitch Tea Delgado, and is paying the price. She brings up her hooker/drug addict past. Stay classy, Tea.

2:10PM EST: This stuff with Carlotta is cute, even if the whole "gay misunderstanding" schtick is as old as the hills. She tells Cristian that she loves him even though he's gay, and that she accepts it, and that he doesn't have to hide it anymore. She talks about noticing "the signs", and a bemused Layla pitches in with "because of all the time he spends at the gym?", and Carlotta agrees and says "and all the trouble he has with women". Cris is flummoxed, and tries to get Layla to vouch for his heterosexuality.

2:20PM EST: Has Dorian always been this shrill-sounding? All I hear is "Kaw! Kaw! Kaw!"

The blond surfer-dude cop is shot by John, and as a dazed Cole is led out of his cell, Oliver swoops in to check on the fallen cop.

Layla reluctantly tells Carlotta that "The Book" is for a friend of theirs, and that Cristian is not gay. There's talk of how accepting Carlotta is even with being a church lady, but the only thing I could think was "that other actress quit over this?

2:25PM EST: Tea has completely destroyed Rachel on the stand, and as Rachel runs out of the courtroom, Nora gets in Tea's face and asks how she could do that. Tea yells "I did it for my client!", at which point Matthew points at her and screams "You're fired!" I'm liking this kid more and more.

2:40PM EST: I love that Oliver is focusing on Police Cop business, and he and John head on out together to capture the bad guys.

Layla and Cristian laugh off what happened with his mom, and then talk about giving "The Book" to Oliver. Layla commends him for going into a bookstore and buying "The Book" for him, which is something a lot of straight guys might be too uncomfortable to do. Cristian admits that two guys at the bookstore actually slipped him their phone numbers, prompting Layla to call him "gay catnip".

2:45PM EST: Tea drives Nora over the edge, and Nora delivers a hot slap across her face. The judge holds Nora in contempt, and for good measure holds Tea in contempt as well. Ha!

Oliver and John approach the mayor's office, and John reminds Oliver that they have to play this by "The Book". So, they're going to tell the mayor's parents that he's gay? I'm confused.

2:55PM EST: Matthew is mad at himself and mad at Tea, but since Tea has been put in a cell with Nora, he should probably be worried about the both of them.

Oliver and John bust into the mayor's office with guns blazing, but he's nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, The Russian mobster shows up at Todd's house ready to shut him up ... permanently.

And once again, Layla shoots down Cristian's not-too-subtle desire to be with her. Poor Cristian. But hey, he still has those two numbers!

Gavin Creel Doesn’t Just Break The Fourth Wall (He Smashes It to Bits!)

Ask any actor: stage performances don’t always translate well on television.

But when Gavin Creel, the star of the new revival of the 1967 musical Hair, took the stage to perform the song “Hair” at this year’s Tony Awards, it was instantly clear why his explosive, trippy performance, with its subtle hint of bisexuality, had been nominated for an award.

Before you knew it, Creel and his fellow cast members had broken the fourth wall, jumping off the stage and dancing out into the audience. Creel even got to serenade Anne Hathaway.

“The ‘Hair’ number just rocked,” Creel admits. “I was really proud of the show and how we came off on the Tonys.”

Now Creel, who was also nominated for a Tony for his Broadway debut in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, is getting more intimate still, with a performance later this month at Joe’s Pub in New York. It’s his first concert since coming out publicly earlier this year, and Creel promises a night of emotional honesty unlike any performance he’s ever given before.

Recently, we chatted with Creel about that breathtaking Tony performance, how his life has changed since coming out as an actor, and his desire to have the first number one single where a guy sings about his love for another guy.

AfterElton.com: So I’ve been listening to your 2006 CD GoodTimeNation and really liking it. I was expecting showtunes, but it’s not. Some of it is very pop. Do you see yourself as a pop star?
Gavin Creel: That would be a dream-come-true. I want to tour and play an auditorium and have it packed with people who know my songs. I don't need to play arenas. I wouldn't turn it down if I got that famous, but I want to be as much of a musician as I am an actor. I want to do both. And be a theater actor. I love the theater. That's where my heart is. I love the way I've been embraced by the musical theater community.

The projects that I've picked, and been able to do, have been really varied in a beautiful way. Going from being in the 20s [in Thoroughly Modern Milly] to Classic Contemporary [in La Cage aux Folles] to being a chimney sweep [in Mary Poppins] to being a hippie [in Hair] is kind of a bizarre group of dudes. All the while, I've always had a desire to sing and compose myself, getting closer and closer to being able to stand in front of an audience and expose who I am through my music.

Прокурорът по делото е обвинил организацията в нарушаване на семейните устои и обществения морал. Това е първият случай на закриване на подобна организация в страна, претендираща за членство в ЕС.

Прокурорът в Републиканската прокуратура в Бакъркьой, Истанбул, Али Чакър поиска до 3 години затвор за известната поп изпълнителка Бюлент Ерсой по обвинение, че с изказванията си е внушавала охладняване на отношението на турския народ към военната служба и армията, пише турският вестник “Заман”. Срещу Ерсой беше повдигнато обвинение за изказването й, че ако е имала синове, нямало да ги изпрати войници и с призива към турските майки да не пращат синовете си войници, който отправи в началото на военната операция в Северен Ирак. В обвинителния акт на прокурора Али Чакър се представят значението и почитта, които отдават турският народ на армията и военната служба. Думите на Ерсой се определят като пропаганда. Първото заседание по делото ще се състои на 18 юни, пише вестникът.

Turks reject gays or atheists as neighbours

Turkey is a candidate country for EU membership, but concerns about human rights are one factor frustrating negotiations.

A survey of Turkish attitudes has found that the vast majority would not want to live next to a gay person.

1,579 persons in 41 cities were polled by Bahcesehir University’s Economic and Social Research Centre.

The results show that Turks are generally happy, think their country will join the EU if it meets all the criteria, but do not want to live next door to people with different identities.

33% said they would not want a neighbour from a different religion, while 88% objected to a gay, atheist neighbour or an unmarried couple.

Турция. Транссексуальные проститутки поставили пьесу о своей жизни

В одном из театров Анкары прошла уникальная премьера, вызвавшая овацию у публики. Актеры впервые оказались на сцене - транссексуалы, занимающиеся проституцией, с помощью спектакля пытались выразить свой протест против дискриминации. На сцене многие из них с трудом сдерживали слезы. Сама пьеса - "Розовый и серый" - рассказывает о судьбе транссексуалов в этой мусульманской стране, и является одной из акций растущего движения трансгендеров.

Исполнительницы главных ролей - транссексуальные женщины Дерья Тунк (Derya Tunc) и Сера Кан (Sera Can) принимают поздравления с успехом, хотя основной их заработок - секс-работа. "Несмотря на всю дискриминацию, я не жалею о том, кто я есть. Я сожалею только о том, что я оказалась в проституции", - говорит Кан.

Практически все транссексуалы в Турции вынуждены заниматься проституцией. По их словам, у них нет других возможностей в обществе, где так сильны гомофобия и трансфобия. Три четверти жителей страны говорят, что гомосексуалы вызывают у них отвращение, хотя среди известных певцов и модельеров есть открытые геи.

Yakınlarına “Avukatıma birkaç kez talimat verdim ama sonra vazgeçtim” dediği öğrenilen ünlü sanatçı önümüzdeki günlerde ikinci evliliğini de bitirmeye hazırlanıyor. Sanatçının bu kararı almadan önce “Armağan’ın düzeleceği yok” dediği öğrenildi.

Armağan Uzun ise bu konuyla ilgili olarak bir televizyon programına telefonla bağlanarak “Bülent Hanım bana bir türlü güvenmiyor. Onu seviyorum ve saygım sonsuz ama bu böyle gitmez. Artık soğumaya başladım. Eğer isterse boşanırım” diye konuşması Ersoy’un boşanma kararından haberdar olduğunu gösterdi.

Bülent Ersoy’un boşanmayı istemesinin sebepleri arasında ise güvensizlik başta geliyor.

Popstar’daki sanatçı dostlarına “Armağan hiç rahat durmuyor. Bu yüzden kaç kez avukatıma boşanmak için talimat verdim ama sonra vazgeçtim” diye dert yanan Ersoy, “Armağan’ın istekleri de bitmek bilmiyor. Ona bir albüm yapmamı, bir de ev almamı istiyor” diyerek içinde bulunduğu durumu paylaşıyormuş.

Baba Uzun: Oğlumun bu istekleri zamanla olur
Armağan Uzun’un gerçekten Bülent Ersoy’dan ev ve albüm isteyip istemediğini öğrenmek için babası Cengiz Uzun’u aradım. Baba Uzun oğlunun gerçekten böyle istekler içinde olduğunu şu cümlelerle doğruladı:

“Bu istekler kendi kendine gelişmesi gereken şeylerdir. Bunlar zamanla olur. Şimdi bizim için önemli olan birbiriyle anlaşmaları. Durup dururken niye boşansınlar ki, biz boşanmasını istemeyiz. Aralarında bir kopukluk var ama bu da normaldir. Oğlum boşanmayı Bülent Hanım’ın inisiyatifine bıraktı. Bülent Hanım boşanmayı isteyebilir ama bize göre bu ikisinin vereceği karara bağlı. Bu sorunlar her ailede olur.”

"Beni Küçük Görene Bakın Zurna"

Турските власти искат да закрият гей организация

Властите в Турция се опитват да закрият лгбт организацията Lambda Istanbul. Обшинските власти в Истанбул са отправили такова искане към съда с твърдението, че организацията нарушава турските закони в областта на етиката. Според обвинението, гей активистите не уважават Наказателния кодекс, в частност текстовете, отнасящи се за защита на моралните ценности, а също и 41 член на Конституцията, където се говори за “благосъстоянието на семейството”.
Съдията по делото заявил, че преди да се произнесе ще събере колкото се може повече материали с помощта на експерти юристи. Следващото гледане на делото ще е на 31 януари 2008 г.
По повод делото холандската лгбт организация СОС заяви, че то не отговаря на критериите за свобода на словото и личността на Европейския съюз, чиито член иска да стане Турция и евентуална забрана на Lambda ще нанесе силен удар по европейския имидж на страмата. СОС призова холандското правителство да не се застъпва за членството на Турция, докато там не започнат да се уважават човешките права.

But most of the people filling the dance floor on Saturday at the club SO36 in the Kreuzberg neighborhood were gay, lesbian or bisexual, and of Turkish or Arab background. They were there for the monthly club night known as Gayhane, an all-too-rare opportunity to merge their immigrant cultures and their sexual identities.

European Muslims, so often portrayed one-dimensionally as rioters, honor killers or terrorists, live diverse lives, most of them trying to get by and to have a good time. That is more difficult if one is both Muslim and gay.

“When you’re here, it’s as if you’re putting on a mask, leaving the everyday outside and just having fun,” said a 22-year-old Turkish man who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear that he would be ostracized or worse if his family found out about his sexual orientation.

TURKEY GAY GUIDE

The age of consent in Turkey is 18. There are no articles on homosexuality in the law but vague references to public morals and public order. The police has the legal right to take anyone who looks suspicious to the police station for interrogation. The general crime level in big cities is among the lowest in Europe. Nine milliion tourists are expected to visit the country in 1996.

Turkey is geographically, politically, economically in Europe. More than 90% of its population is muslim. The police has wide powers, and some fractions in the police force has close ties with the radical nationalist right-wing groups. Despite the lack of any organized gay bashing, gays have not been allowed to come out and get organized in an open fashion. gay movements so far have been underground movements. "International Christopher Street day" (gay pride) festivities planned to take place in Istanbul in July 1993 was first allowed, and then banned by the local government officials before taking place. A similar attempt to organize a cultural week in September 1995 by Lambda Istanbul was not allowed on the grounds "of public morals".

Homosexuality was a rooted tradition in the era of Ottoman Empire which lasted more than five centuries. It is known that some of the sultans had homosexual affairs and public Turkish baths (hammams) were the common meeting place among men. There were poets and musicians who were known to be homosexual. These traditions lost their power with the westernization of Turkey which came with the establishment of the Republic in 1923. But there is a general acceptance towards effeminate male entertainers. For example the most famous Turkish classical singer Zeki Muren is a latent, extremely flamboyant gay person, and has been so since 1950's or Bülent Ersoy, who is a very popular and has multi-million selling albums although being a transexual.Turkey has a macho culture, and this is reflected in gay attitudes: Traditionally, gays are divided into the active (laco) and the passive (lubunya). However a more recent and a more westernized culture is beginning to gain ground where no categorization is felt necessary.

В Истанбул има невероятни мостове, носталгични трамваи от миналото, дори остров със затвор. Въпреки че тук се изявяват най-много хомосексуални артисти в страната, почти никой не говори за гейове и лесбийки. Подобни разговори може да са опасни.
В Турция не е забранено да си гей или лесбийка. От много години по турските сцени се изявяват хомосексуални и транссексуални творци. Транссексуалната певица Бюлент Ерсой въодушевява публиката, а в селата на Анадола на семейните тържества редовно играят кючек мъже-танцьори, облечени в женски дрехи. Извън сцената обаче почти никой не смее да признае, че е хомо или транссексуален.

“Преди да дойда тук, доста се чудех как ще се чувствам в като хомосексуален”, казва 26-годишният студент от Берлин Томас Шад. Той е в Истанбул от септември 2006 г. и доста бързо е разбрал, че тук почти не се говори за “обратните”. “Ако разговорът се завърти около това, отговарям съвсем открито”, споделя той.

Хетеросексуалните турци най-често реагират на хомосексуалните си сънародници с почти истерично отхвърляне. Затова преди няколко години един турски журналист предупреди читателите си да не ядат генетично обработени домати, защото могат да станат обратни. Турското министерство на здравеопазването пък се е заело да образова обществеността с информационни брошури за опасността от СПИН и твърди, че болестта се разпространява “изключително сред обратни”.

В мюсюлманските държави сексуалността продължава да бъде тема табу. “Вероятно именно разделението на половете благоприятства приеманата тихомълком от обществото хомосексуалност”, казва Шад. Когато мъжете или жените са насаме, е позволено всичко.

Всеки турчин се ражда войник

Всеки, който пристигне в Турция без предварителна информация, ще бъде впечатлен. Стари и млади турци се шляят по улиците в тясна физическа близост. Единият прегръща другия, а той се снижава и се сгушва в прегръдките му. Дори поседнали за малко на пейките в парка, в уличните кафенета или в метрото, мъжете демонстрират привързаността си и се докосват. Целуват се сърдечно по бузите за добре дошли и за довиждане. Тези жестове обаче не трябва в никакъв случай да се разбират погрешно. Защото хомосексуалният живот в Турция не се показва, а на мъжествеността се отделя специално внимание. “Всеки турчин се ражда войник” – това е изречението, което всяко момче запомня от най-ранна възраст.

Така че гейовете и лесбийките предпочитат да не се отличават от останалите. Баровете, в които мъжки или транссексуални проститутки предлагат услугите си, са пълни догоре – по правило с турски женени мъже. Официално за това не се говори. И, разбира се, никой не е ходил там.

Според изследване на обединението на гейовете и лесбийките Lambda 63 процента от 400 запитани в Турция се чувстват принудени да се преструват, че имат хетеросексуални партньори. 89 процента крият сексуалната си идентичност напълно или частично.

Организация без звънец и табела

“Транссексуалните са нападани на улицата, гонят ги от домовете им или полицията ги арестува”, казва Шад, който работи за Lambda. Организацията е една от общо четирите, регистрирани в Турция, които се застъпват за правата на лесбийките, гейовете, бисексуалните, транссексуалните и травеститите. От 1993 г. офисът на съюза е в квартал Бейодлу – район, в който трассексуалните са част от уличния пейзаж.

По съображения за сигурност организацията няма звънец и табела, но пък развява знамето в цветовете на дъгата. Сътрудниците помагат на нуждаещите се със съвети и са на разположение на горещ телефон. Офисът постоянно е заплашен от закриване: градските власти смятат, че съществуването на съюза ще навреди на морала.

Доскоро Умут Гюнер, главен редактор и издател на списанието за гейове и лесбийки Kaos GL, е бил заплашен с три години затвор, след като посветил един брой на темата «порнография». Според обвиненията той публикувал «непристойни» материали.

По-безобидни, но затова пък по-често срещани, са подигравките и дискриминацията на улицата. Преди няколко месеца истанбулски студенти организираха акция на солидарност. Те носиха тениски с надписа «моят приятел е гей». През март 2007 г. 15 студенти от университета Билги в Истанбул основаха обединението Билги Гьоккусаги (дъга) – първият официален студентски клуб за правата на лесбийките, гейовете, бисексуалните и транссексуалните в Турция.

Игра със собствени правила

«Чужденците се радват на особен статут», казва Шад. «Те могат да се движат много по-свободно и дори да казват открито, че са «обратни». Въпреки това нощният живот крие опасности, особено в кварталите с червени фенери, където са повечето клубове за гейове и лесбийки.»

Когато дошъл тук, той трябвало да научи правилата на играта. «В началото доста безгрижно се возех на такси и се включвах във всеки разговор. Оказа се, че понякога шофьорите на такси правят сексуални оферти на мъжете-клиенти.» Междувременно Шад се е научил да изглежда дистанциран и да е предпазлив. Същото правят и повечето турци.

«За щастие тук не ми се е случило нищо лошо», твърди студентът. Но пък е чувал истории, които го плашат. Като например онази за хомосексуалния турчин, чиито родители разбрали за сексуалната му ориентация от анонимно писмо, тъй като бил видян през нощта в определен район. Бащата започнал да говори със сина си с оръжие в ръка. «В такива случаи се питаш дали в тази страна можеш да посъветваш някого да говори открито за хомосексуалността си и да е откровен», казва Шад. Gay Turkey

For the gay people who have not visited Turkey before, the first step should be getting familiar with the gay culture. The gay culture of Turkey is fairly different than the gay culture of the western countries, as is the case with the general Turkish culture. Turkey, being situated at the intersection of Europe and Asia geographically, was effected both by the western and oriental cultures. Turkey is the only Muslim country where homosexuality is not illegal. This makes Turkish gay life unique in the world. This difference might be good or bad depending on your expectations, but one thing is for sure: It is very vivacious and interesting.
Note that we avoid to cause another misunderstanding with above explanation, because in the west there is already a very big misunderstanding about Turkish culture. Surprisingly, some people in the west still think of Turkey as a very typical and traditional Middle-Eastern country and some of them even think Turkey is just like other Arabic countries and the religion is dominating everything. In reality, Turkey has got a special culture of her own, much closer to the Western culture than most other Middle Eastern countries, except her incorrigible economy maybe.
To understand the gay life in Turkey, let's analyze two Turkish words: "ibne" and "oglan". Actually, both words literally mean "boy" although they are now being used as expression of insult. "Ibne" is originally exported from Arabic and it is being used with a meaning very close to "faggot" in today's Turkish. Although "oglan" means exactly "boy" in formal Turkish, it is often being used to mean "gay" in slang language. Their present meanings' got a historical background:
As we all know, a boy is not a man, not hairy, without beard, with a voice more like a woman, he's got a softer skin etc....As you can easily notice, these are all descriptions of a woman. Especially at times when religion was stronger, a boy could probably be the substitution of a woman. This might be a key to understand the remains of the history in modern Turkish gay culture. Today, the dominating gay-life style for the gay people living in Turkey is between two groups; the "active" ones who would NOT mostly accept to be called "gay" and who are mostly bisexuals, and the "passive" ones who pretend to be women in bed, and who act and sometimes dress themselves up more effeminately. So the first question after meeting a gay-related person might very possibly be "Are you passive or active (bottom or top) ?"
Spreading use of the English word "gay" also is an indication of changing gay culture in recent years. Other people are also getting more conscious about gay people and accepting their different sexual identity more. But still there's a long way to go, and maybe it's questionable which life style is better.
Maybe, these different cultures might be considered as an advantage for gay people in Turkey in a way, since they have at least the two alternatives to choose as their life styles.

Call to End Legal Action Against Turkish Gay Rights Group

EW YORK, October 16, 2007 – A legal challenge by the governor of Istanbul seeking to close down Lambda Istanbul, a gay rights organization, threatens basic freedoms of association and expression, Human Rights Watch said today.

“Shutting down groups because you don’t like the people they represent is an attack on freedom itself,” said Juliana Cano Nieto, researcher in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights Watch, who will attend a court hearing in Istanbul on the organisation’s fate in two day’s time (October 18).

“If organizations that defend human rights cannot function, Turkey’s status as a real democracy is in danger,” she pointed out.

The Governor’s Office of Istanbul has demanded the closure of Lambda Istanbul, an organisation defending lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people’s rights in Turkey, claiming that the name and objectives of the group are “against the law and morality”. The governor had asked in early 2007 that the group be shut down

In July, the local Prosecutor’s Office rejected the complaint. The Governor’s Office then took the case to a higher court, the Beyoglu Sutluce Court of First Instance No. 5, which heard the case in July 2007 and ordered a second hearing for October.

The Provincial Associations Directorate of the Governor’s Office, responsible for nongovernmental organizations, alleged that Lambda Istanbul’s aims violate the Turkish Civil Code and Article 41 of the Constitution.

Article 56 of the Turkish Civil Code states that: “No association may be founded for purposes against law and morality.” Article 41 of the Turkish Constitution states that “[t]he family is the foundation of the Turkish society …”and that “[t]he state shall take the necessary measures and establish the necessary organisation to ensure the peace and welfare of the family.” Article 54 of Turkey’s Law on Associations allows for the suspension of organizations on the grounds, among others, of “public morality.”

Lambda Istanbul’s charter defines its main aim as “to support all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people to adopt equality as a value, to realize their inner selves and to help bring peace and welfare; to guide LGBT individuals in becoming more professional, more active and responsible towards society and in social matters.”

The governor’s complaint also claims the group’s name contravenes the law as “Lambda” is not a Turkish word. The word is an internationally recognized symbol of LGBT identity.

Lambda Istanbul has defended the Turkish LGBT community since its creation in 1993. It operates a telephone helpline to counsel LGBT people and raises awareness through cultural, educational, and political activities.

It has actively lobbied for legal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Lambda applied for nongovernmental organization status with the Ministry of the Interior in 2006, but its application is on hold until the court reaches a decision.

Government officials have made similar legal moves to shut down other lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations in Turkey.

Kaos GL, based in Ankara, faced a demand for closure from Ankara’s deputy governor, Selahattin Ekmenoglu, in 2005. The closure petition was dismissed by the Prosecutor’s Office.

In 2005, sexual orientation was included as a protected status in an early draft of an anti-discrimination bill in Parliament, but lawmakers later eliminated the language. Meanwhile, laws and regulations that refer to “general morality” are still used to restrict LGBT people’s rights to association and expression, and also to justify police arrests and harassment on the streets.

Turkey is a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Both treaties protect the rights to freedom of expression and association and prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The country is also in the early stages as an applicant for European Union membership.
